The
Saints clung on 'til midway through the third quarter, when a volley of
goals from Farmer, Green and a terrific effort from Yze finally buried
them. And it became a rout in an embarrassing last quarter by the
Saints. They've got some real problems.

New team leader Shane Woewodin led the way for the Demons with 30
disposals (22 kicks) and a goal. Adem Yze, who always finds plenty of
space, he's the Rod Ashman of the noughts, had 23 touches and 2 goals,
along with fellow midfielders Steve Powell (20 touches, 3 goals) and
Anthony McDonald (26) they were the key to the victory. Guy Rigoni had
26 touches against Harvey, who got 13 more than that but wasn't much
more effective. Farmer kicked 5 goals from 14 kicks and young forwards
Robertson and Brad Green bagged 4 goals each. Brent Grgic was important
early with 3 goals. Anthony Ingerson kept Everitt quiet after an ominous
start and White won the ruck. St. Kilda had few winners, Rob Harvey got
the ball 39 times but had limited effect, defender Max Hudghton kept
Dave Schwarz to one mark and one goal, good considering, and Tony
Delaney played well again with 20 disposals and a goal. Watson found
praise for youngsters Campbell (11 disposals, 2 goals), Davis and
Schwarze. Everitt kicked 3 goals, Loewe 2. Watson said "We were just
inept, particularly in the second half. I think we had four effective
tackles after half time. You're not going to beat Dimboola thirds if you
play football like that." And being from Dimboola, he'd know. Daniher
opined "It was a good win, a big win in the end, and we've been on the
receiving end of a couple of those. Our players didn't take the foot off
the accelerator...probably, it's nearly two wins with the percentage
gained."

At Colonial:
Richmond 1.1 5.2 10.6 13.9.87
Fremantle 5.4 7.10 8.14 12.16.88

Arrgghh. By a point. But Freo would've been robbed if they didn't win,
and since the Tiges have robbed 'em a couple of times perhaps it was
justice. Modra kicked a behind - his seventh - with a minute left to put
the Dockers in front, after they'd led most of the day. Richmond went in
with a few missing, Nick Daffy was under club suspension following a
drunken incident in Bendigo last weekend, Wayne Campbell (calf) and
Darren Gaspar (achilles) were late withdrawals. By the end of this one
Torney was stretchered off unconscious and Richo had a broken foot. Six
to eight, they reckon. I love footy. Brendon Gale returned from injury,
Craig Biddiscombe got a run and there was a first-gamer, half-forward
Andrew Mills from Euroa. Only one change for the Dockers, Antoni Grover
axed for Heath Black.

My first trip to the Tundradome and once you're past the nightmare of
getting in (if you've not pre-booked), it's pretty good. It's a bit
Tennis Centre, lots of burnt orange decor and desperately groovy
signage, but you are very close to the action and the seats are better
than the 'G, with more leg-room. I hadn't realised the ground runs
north-south, which means players at the southern end look directly into
the sun as kicks come down. Anyway. Fremantle started much better than
the Tiges with lots of running to the contest and precise disposal over
short distances before planting it on Modra's chest. Richmond moved it
forward any old how and relied on individual brilliance. Knights was
typical, twisting, turning and ducking around a dozen Dockers, then
wobbling a kick nowhere in particular. Modra led Andy Kellaway all over
the place with two early goals and a miss before Richardson dobbed the
Tiges' first, Bandy was on him. Hasleby took a terrific mark close in
and converted, McManus slotted one and Mods sausaged again as the
visitors had it all over the Tigres. Justin Longmuir missed a sitter
just on quarter-time, and Modra opened the second term with three
consecutive behinds. Bourke was on him now. The Tiges were listing
heavily and taking much water, but they managed to tie the game up for a
bit and get a couple of goals, Richardson from a grab and Harrison
pinched one. But Freo were creating so many chances they had to goal
again soon, and sure enough Waterhouse marked and converted from the
flank. Fewster smacked one through from 50m after a strong grab and the
Dockulators led by 5 goals in the shadow of half time. Tiges were a
trifle lucky to have Richardson boot two late goals and stay in it.

A much better third term from the Tiggers. The midfield worked harder
with Hilton and Bowden prominent, Rogers pushed forward and provided an
alternative to Richardson. They kicked 5 consecutive goals to grab the
lead, Rogers with three of those from some good marks and kicks, two
from the pocket and the other from 50m (or 47m according to radio's
Brian Taylor). Andy Kellaway dobbed one following a gutsy mark, Bowden
roosted a sausage after Knights dished off. The Freo of old mighta
folded at this point, but it was Modra again to the rescue with a late
goal to narrow the Tiger lead. Mods had missed more times too, but his
quick, early leads and strong marking were excellent. If he led straight
rather than along the boundary, he mightn't miss so many. Modra booted
three more goals in the early final term and and Waterhouse
six-pointered after a mark. All Dockers as they led by 20 points.
Richmerde stared down the barrel but their own wayward genius,
Richardson, stoked the flame with consecutive goals via two grabs, the
second saw him race right in and pump it into the stands. Debutant Mills
had sprayed some interesting kicks around but he slotted perfectly
following a mark on the boundary line to cut the margin to a point and a
rushed one levelled 'em It was around this time that Richardson hurt his
foot when a pack fell on it, Torney was knocked out diving after the
ball and being hammered by Koops, who was reported for charging. Perhaps
fittingly, Modra broke the deadlock with a lead, mark and point from the
left pocket. We had to listen to their sphincter-loosening song.

Modra was "both hero and villain" according to Drum, with 7.6 from 11
marks and 17 kicks. But his full-forward play was textbook stuff and
they wouldn't have won without him. Their midfield won on the day,
McManus was a bit wasteful but good with 22 disposals and a goal, Cook
has been an excellent pick-up, he had 25 touches and Fletcher (22 disps)
and Callaghan (20, 0.3) had their usual in-close effect. Kickett was
very good off half-back for 15 touches and Clem Michael's big leaps gave
his midfielders first use. Waterhouse kicked 2 goals. Matty Richardson
kept the Tiges in it with 6 goals from 10 marks, any midfield drive came
from the battling Clint King (25 disposals) and Joel Bowden (22 touches,
a goal), Knights (23 handlings) and Hilton (21) were alright. Torney
lined up on Waterhouse, a strange move but Spud knew his stuff, Torney
held the blonde boof to 2 marks. Just his luck to have both result in
goals. Matt Rogers sparked the third-term revival with 3 goals, he had
14 touches altogether. Frawley said "We started the first game well and
we won it and the last three we've started terribly. The buck stops with
me on that one. Have to look back and try something different." Drum
reckoned "Certainly we should have been further ahead and we were lucky
we weren't made to pay the ultimate price. I think the last quarter is
going to be full of a lot of positives for the club." Yeah, like that
mongrel Koops getting RUBBED OUT.
