Why 7s when AFL 9s is already a thing?
I played AFL 9's last week for the first time in a scratch match to the eagles/cats game on Thursday.

Apart from not letting the ball hit the ground (which for mine really takes away a lot of the uniqueness of our game) it's actually really fun to play.

I don't understand why they wouldn't market that, unless they are trying to jump on the rugby 7's popularity.

I won't go out of my way to watch this though.. regardless of whether it's a bye round or not.

I have a idea. Let's play a game of footy that has two umpires. If you get tackled and drop the ball you get a free kick payed against you. If you throw the ball it's a free kick against you. Limit the interchange to 30 per side per game. Players playing in a position instead of in a rolling scrum. Full forwards kicking 7 to 10 goals a game. Finally... Every team has their own home ground. That's the footy that I want to see. Not the rugby style crap that the game has turned into thanks to the people at AFL house.

How will this actually work on a soccer field? Will there be point posts? Or just goals post? How would the scoring work? 50m line? or 25m line instead? Will there be Throw-ins? Balls ups? etc.. Curious..

Ridiculous concept btw. Yet people no doubt will go as well as watch on TV and the AFL will say it was a big success!

I'm guessing it will be played at AAMI park?
I imagine something like IR but with a sherrin and without the goalnet.

I'm not thrilled. Who would be? But who really cares enough to be angry about the AFL trying it. Rugby 7s probably seemed pretty stupid at first too. Same for limited overs cricket.

Probably just becomes the modern version of a lightning premiership. Weird that they don't combine this with AFL 9s to help give this a grassroots element of sorts given the marketing they already put into that. But whatever.

Rugby 7s is still stupid.
Limited overs cricket is run by gambling interests.

*AFL House sit down to watch the enthralling second match of State of Origin*

Gil: hey, i just had a great idea! Let's play a shitty dead heat game and put an 'X' at the end of it to make it sound really cool!

Rest of AFL house: hear hear!

No.

Sportsbet call GM and say 'here is an idea'.

GM says 'yes Master'.

Gils annual dinner with the AFL coaches is on around this time of year.

Just before dinner wrapped up Chris Scott went for a slash and on the way back he spotted Damien Barrett in the next room with his ear next to the door of the coaches dining room.

Scotty as he re entered the room gave the secret coaches signal that they were being "doorstopped" and in a hushed whisper they came up with the AFL X concept , to troll Barrett.

The marketing team were probably thinking "i" is not trendy anymore. iphone, i30 isnack 2.0 are so 2007.

X is so edgy....think it might catch on around the world

It's a simplified version of the game so that the AFL can package it up and use it for international expansion and broadcasting. Overseas participation is fundamentally easier on a smaller ground with less players, and for TV viewers, with less moving parts (though the fundamental skills of the game are identical), the game will be easier to understand for first-time watchers overseas. AFL might not be popular now, but who knows how globalised our world will be in 20, 30, 50 years, and the AFL is getting in early to ensure we're not a generation behind whilst virtually every other sport in the world is pushing into global markets. We're not the NFL - we don't have the benefit of being the strongest economy in the world. We have to push our product, whether or not that product what we've all grown up with, onto the world if we want it to stick with a future global society.

People have to think bigger picture here. Expansion isn't limited to just NSW and Queensland.

THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makes me so angry.

I been wanting for years the AFL to play State of Origin in early March before club seasons start and promote it big time with huge money and incentive for players and clubs to embrace players taking part for 2 weekends and something really special for our game.
But no, they neglect what could the biggest promotion for game by creating a higher level to aspire for all players and want to put that money into a bloody watered down abbreviation of it when half the players wanting a break or going overseas for down time from the long club season.

FMD, they got no idea about how to do what is good for the game if they can neglect a higher standard and spending planning time and money on this.
What a ******* joke!!!!

Unlike the 90s, the State of origin would be terrible to watch today. VICS would win easily.

It doesnt work anyway, teams dont want to put their best players on the line mid season. AFLX is after the seasons over for teams missing in finals action and to fill the bye round.

Seriously were did this come from.. have they even trialled it to see what it will kind of look like?? Or are they just chucking millions into making this useless comp noone will give two ****s about.

I cant stand the idea all these campaigners in suits most probably never played a game sitting in a meeting getting paid a fortune to make dumb decisions and always try being modern and shit... deadset the average bloke on the street has more common sense.

I think it's a joke that Barrett is claiming the report for it. Was talked about at least back in March, Herald sun reported it. Vintage Damian "the flog" barrett.

If anyone even thinks this is even the slightest of a good idea you're whats wrong with the sport, modern sport even, at the moment. Too busy looking at the Supporters as Customers for a quick pay day.

Good luck to the AFL trying to get hold of any "soccer" sized pitches after ****ing the A-League over for so many years with venues.

Nice try Gil, but once again, not the last time either, you've f**ked up.
