AFL's Broken Abacus

How in the wide world of sports is this possible....

How can the AFL get it to where we get the base level of funding...which is less than Collingwood.

The Pies have more $$$ than everyone and we get less than them.

As Pauline says....

"Please explain?"

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/rich-clubs-kick-up-stink-over-funding-20110926-1ktlh.html

If they base it on memberships, we are well under Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon, West Coast etc.

If they base it on success, St Kilda has been in the last 2 grand finals yet they get more than us.

If they base it on history, we were against the wall and coin a Top Gun phrase..." in a flat spin and headed out to sea" 12 years ago... and we pulled ourselves out through some pretty ordinary times and no great hand outs and when we finally build the empire the AFL decides to become philanthropic and we get the least amount possible....

I dont see the equality in any of it....

Go Catters...

Maybe it's going towards some sort of dental plan for their members?

Seriously though, it's pretty ridiculous. Please explain indeed.

Does anyone remember the amount given to the club for the stadium redevelopment? As the article suggests, this could play a part here.
I am a bit surprised though that Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, WC and Freo all receive more

Collingwood are about to do a major redevelopment. The AFL have been pretty generous to us with our stadium rebuild so I'm not really bothered.

Judging by the references to us in the article the club doesn't feel that way.

Understand that the equalisation fund is a necessary form of footy socialism but I'd still like an explanation as to why arguably the wealthiest club in the comp gets a mil bonus - redevelopment or not.

The only thing I can think of is that they get some sort of compo for being forced to play home games at Etihad to fulfill fixture contract clauses for the AFL.

Basically its the old "give a man a fish" thing. I really think there are some clubs that will never learn how to fish and will always need help feeding themselves. The AFL have helped us with the stadium and that is more sustainable than a handout.

With our own stadium , our potential to make our own $$ is huge so Im not fussed. Id rather they just lock us in for 9 games a year min at KP @ 1M per each game and we will be a very strong club.

And (I know its only a dream) but one game a year where we play a blockbuster would be fantastic. If they really want to maximze the the new size of stadium we must get more than just interstate games and the poor melbourne teams.

I tend to agree on that one.
If other teams like the dogs or roos dont get better deals at jiihad, I would be thinking that they may play some home games at KP and that is paydirt for us!!

Sorry for the intrusion onto your board, cats fans.

The extra million is for our redevelopment of the Olympic Park precinct. The AFL has in the past provided funds for basically every club that has undertaken major works at its training/admin bases. Essendon, Carlton & Geelong included.

Just on finances. Colin Carter on 774 today commented that winning the GF will be a tremendous boost to our finances. Losing we'll break about even when taking all the costs involved into account. I guesss it's largely related to merchandise sold or foregone as the case may be.

Should they win (as if;)) Pert said the Pies will have 22 booths at the Sunday family day flogging mercahdise and expect to take over 2 mill on that day alone.
