Aggression

So essentially one alleged missed bump = no more aggression in the team. Is that the argument?

Losing I said, not lost. You can lose things one piece at a time you know. Plus it was a question, not a statement, to stimulate discussion.

Yes we have lost it not losing it.

We have gone from being undisciplined giving away stupid 50's nearly every week and players being reported all the time.
To hardly anyone getting reported and not as many stupid 50's.
Rarely do we get involved in melees.

Its a good thing in those respects but a bad thing in other ways.
Overall we are considered a soft footy team, our youngsters get pushed and shoved around by bigger bodies and noone ever stands up for them.
We get smashed in stoppages due to softness.

Its the only thing i have against Pav, he is too nice and soft.
The rest of the team follows his example.
Unfortunately the rest dont have his talent to be soft, so they need to make up for it with being more aggressive.

I honestly never noticed this one, if I saw some footage of it I might be able to make a call.

Sometimes we may look a little subdued, but then that's the freo way when the other team has a run on. We don't always rise when we should.

I must have read something wrong... How can McPhee be criticized for toughness and aggression? Surely he is one of the first to fly the flag, first to run in and first to take any opportunity to clean someone up fairly (sometimes unfairly). Just a missed opportunity, nothing more, nothing less....

Just wait till Dawson gets back, boy loves putting the hurt on. With him, De boer, Lower, Pearce, McPhee, Mayne and Ballantyne in the team I don't think physicality has been lacking at all, just our skill level that lets us down.
And the odd completely coach-killing, fan-head-in-hands, brain-fade.

Yes, we are all looking at you Michael Johnson.

It is said that if you get up close to him, you can hear the sea inside his head.

Ross Lyon was before my time but wasn't he renowned as a bit of a hard ****? I remember Dermie saying that having Ross Lyon steaming towards you was a pretty frightening experience.

He's a pretty uncompromising competitor, I doubt he's going to discourage his players from laying the opposition out should the opportunity arise.

better than "Whispering Eye" i suppose.......

I don't think the team lacks hardness at all. Inexperienced young players and older players learning a new game plan not standing where they should gives the impression we are not hard enough. Wait until the players fully understand where to be and the big sheppards, shirtfronts and bumps will be there with a vengance!!!

I am just glad we've lost that snipey "tuff" stuff that we had going a few years back. Much more interested in the hardness at the ball that seems to be in the side now.

But....if there is a chance to crunch a player like Swan, you do it; An opportunity missed rather than a lack of hardness.

I think in McPhee's case the opportunity was possibly there to bump/tackle. Though it was more likely he would've been able to do nothing more than smother. Then again, the most likely scenario was for him to get sidestepped and made to look a goose.

That's what I reckon too. The angle he was coming in on he would have been easily sidestepped if he was running fast enough to lay a decent hit.

Then Swan wold have kicked an even easier goal. Is that what you meant when you alluded to Harvey's style Reggie?

If you want to go there, we can. Then we can discuss why we've been losing games at home that we should be winning. I think, however, that there is already a thread dedicated to such things.

I'll just say I'm confident Lyon is going to turn us into a mentally tough team, something far more important than the odd act of aggression out on the field. That's what's been holding us back all these years.

I think its fairly obvious McPhee is trying to corall him and keep him up against the boundary, making it a hard shot for Swan to take. If he were to over-commit it would've been easier and everyone would be blasting McPhee for getting sidestepped so easily.

Skill level has always been a problem besides 2nd qtr round 1 2010.
