BANKING chief Ahmed Fahour will not join the Carlton board after it voted against his inclusion.
Looks like the board thinks it's too big as it is. Swann's comment indicates that Smorgon-era directors might be asked to move on to make room for Fahour in the future.

I would have thought this would be a conflict of interest given NAB is one of the AFL's major sponsors...
I doubt that would make for a conflict. Just about every club in the league has links between sponsors and directors. Anyway, Fahour is not the NAB - he just works there. It's not like he can push his directors around into doing something they don't like.

If we had a loan with the NAB it might make for a conflict of interest, but I seem to remember that we bank with someone else since Pratt rearranged our finances. So I doubt that'll be a problem either.

Personally I think there are too many conflict of interest jockeys around trying to make something out of nothing. i.e. I couldn't give a fig if Eddie calls Collingwood games because it only makes it sweeter when they lose.

No, but in the kypothetical world that Fahour is on the Carlton board, it is conceivable there would be a few anxieties given the AFL is the governing body of all AFL clubs that Carlton may receive beneficial treatment.

Beneficial treatment from whom? IIRC, Carlton don't have any debt with the NAB, as these have now been bought out by Westpac, at a smaller rate in the dollar. I tried to download the Annual Report, but it doesn't seem to want to download for me.

That's what I recall too.

DynamoUltra thinks the NAB might blackmail the AFL into giving us sweetheart deals. That's forgetting that Fahour is only the CEO at NAB, not a majority shareholder. He can't go to his board and ask them to blackmail the AFL on our behalf - he'd be laughed out of the building.

But I like the way he's thinking. Visy needs to sign a lucrative sponsorship deal with the AFL as soon as possible. :D Don't worry DynamoUltra, we'll give you credit if it works.

I don't think Hawthorn should be talking about conflict of interest, Peter Hudson was instrumental in them getting the sponsorship deal with the government in his role with AFL Tasmania.

As has been said, this stuff happens all the time with AFL sponsors, there's checks and balances in these organisations to stop inappropriate actions.

In an ideal world, Pratt will stay around for as long as his health permits, and then hopefully he will hand over the reins to Ahmed Fahour, to continue the great work Pratt has done to pick the giant football club up off it's knees.

I wouldn't use the term "blackmail", but the AFL may feel obliged to give Carlton beneficial treatment because Fahour is on their board. It's not a matter of the Fahour saying, "NAB sponsors you, now give the CFC an interest free loan for 50 so we can build a mega-stadium", instead, my concern lies with the AFL board who would say, "we'll give Carlton, not St. Kilda, Kangaroos or Western Bulldogs a 50 year interest free loan because Ahmed Fahour is the CEO of one of our major sponsors".

That's my concern and I Hope that makes sense - given the state of the AFL board I'm sure you can understand that this could be a possibility. Anyway, it doesn't matter as Fahour has not been elected.
