What the hell are Vlahov and Longley doing?

Not only have they sacked one of Australia's best coaches (or at least decided not to renew his contract), but it logically follows that one of the country's most exciting young talents (namely Stephen) will follow his father wherever he goes.

They must have another coach lined up - or there is more to this story internally

Stay tuned.........

Boti Nagy in today's Advertiser:

"Heard he was hawking himself and son Stephen to the new NZ franchise, provided it was prepared to rename itself the All Blacks..."

Rumours on the radio suggest that Lichti may coach!!

As much as I love Lichti (he is my favourite all time player), is this a wise move? He's only been out of the game a few years?

I dont know whats going on??? We won the title under Black in 2000, he hasnt missed the playoffs in his tenure, we just made the NBL Finals again....and they sack him?

Now I just have to wait on the info...very disturbing. Oh and Licti? Hey I like the guy but Grace is older than him :D

Stephen Black has reportedly been asked to be released from the last year of his contract.

Apparrently Allan Black was told at 4:30 that he was not having his contract renewed after Vlahov and Longley had spent the day interviewing the players.

Something is going on

In a side note Mike Ellis was announced in The West as a candidate for the position.

Like i said earlier, the only way Luc and Andrew are going to turn this disaster around is if they've got Phil Jackson lined up.

Fancy sacking a good coach, especially when you know his son, who is your future on court leader, will walk too.

Isn't he Vlahov's best mate?

Next you'll have James Crawford as GM........

This has me very annoyed also. I wonder if Vlahov and Longley have even realised that you are losing the best up and coming PG in the league. He will walk no question now that his dad has been sacked.

But if they have interviewed the players one by one throughout the day and all the players dont seem to want him back then what option do they have. You cant have your players playing for someone they dont want to play for. Think Judge and the Eagles.

But firing Black has it's consequences. We have all but lost S.Black and that really ****es me off, sure Grace seems to never lose a step but he wont be around forever and I cant see him going around after next season, maybe 2 more seasons. But S.Black was the future, he was going to lead us and help fill the gaping hole Grace will eventually leave. Now what??

A personality conflict between Longley and Black seems to have cost Black his job (It's funny because Longley always comes across as the kind of guy who would never have a personality conflict with anyone).

The story also blows the Lichti rumour away too.

Black blames Longley rift

By Steve Butler and Dave Hughes

GRAND final coach Alan Black yesterday blamed a personality conflict with high-profile owner Luc Longley for his dismissal from the Perth Wildcats.

Black said differences with Longley had surfaced last year but the two-time NBL coach-of-the-year felt let down that his coaching contract would not be renewed.

"I'm very disappointed because I feel you should be able to work out any personality problems without having to be best friends," said Black. "I couldn't be the 'ra-ra' American coach they wanted because it's just not me.

"I feel that when you're a coach, your record speaks for itself and we've had an outstanding year.

"I've done everything they wanted me to do except win the championship. We finished the season equal top, had a fantastic home record and the team always played hard."

Black said the Wildcats' administration had given him no minimum performance criteria, other than to warn him a month ago a loss in the quarterfinals would not be viewed favourably.

"They said that if we went out against Adelaide it would be unsatisfactory," he revealed. "Other than that, nothing. I had no indication, so what happened was a huge surprise. Staggering."

Black said he would need time to decide what direction his future would take.

"I'd like to stay in basketball - it's a passion," he said. "I'd prefer to remain involved in some way, but I don't know if I'd be keen to jump on the NBL merry-go-round again."

Longley is on a sailing trip and could not be contacted but co-owner Andrew Vlahov implied Black's comments were sour grapes.

"It is an inaccurate opinion," he said. "He's obviously disappointed with our decision."

Vlahov declined to detail the reasons for letting Black go. However, it is known the Wildcats conducted a strategic review and consulted a public relations company before the decision and had doubts whether Black projected the image the club wanted.

Vlahov confirmed yesterday Stephen Black had asked to be released after learning of his father's dismissal.

"He's still got a year left on his contract and we will talk to him in a week or two because we want to keep him," said Vlahov.

Black said he had advised his son to take some time to consider his decision. Stephen has an Irish passport and has the opportunity to play in Europe. However, he is also likely to be named in a 20-strong Australian Boomers squad next week.

If he goes ahead with his threat and leaves, the Wildcats will have to find a back-up for Ricky Grace, who will be 37 next season.

The club cannot leave it too long to resolve the situation. Next Tuesday the NBL will formally endorse an agreement to slash the salary cap from $1.05 million to $700,000, with a clause that existing contracts be honoured.

Teams will have to make some hard decisions about shedding players and the man on the brink is starting centre Brett Wheeler.

He, Carmie Olowoyo and Sunday Adebayo are out of contract and it will be difficult for Perth to retain Wheeler, given their seven contracted players push them over the limit.

However, should Black go, the Wildcats might be able to make enough adjustments to keep the centre.

Assistant coach and former captain Mike Ellis remains the favourite to get the head coaching position.

Two potential applicants, both former players, have ruled themselves out. Scott Fisher said yesterday he was committed to the real-estate profession and Todd Lichti revealed he would remain in Melbourne, having bought a wine business there.
