I went to work like most did. Hawke's remark did not hold any sway. It was funny though.

I was on a train in Melbourne when the announcement of the win came over the two-way, IIRC. It certainly was an Australia-wide celebration, though the West Aussies may have partied a lot harder at the time

I was in Uni in America. My prof, an English guy, said he was surprised I was in any state to attend class the next day.

We had a RDO at our primary school the day after we won it, may have just been a coincidence or the teachers planned it so they could get on the booze and celebrate if we won it. I was too young to get up to watch the races, they started about 3am in the morning from memory but I can still remember the excitement about it all.

Does seem odd that the whole country got so swept up in yacht racing back then when no one here normally gives a stuff about it, even The America's Cup here in 1987 didn't have the same excitement about it, possibly because we didn't look much chance of defending it.

One of my mum's friend's brother is Tom Schnackenberg who designed the sails for Australia II and also for Team New Zealand when they won The America's Cup, his innovative sail designs were probably just as much a reason for Australia II winning as the winged keel.

He's in The America's Cup Hall of Fame.

He is legendary for being an Aussie Gordon Gecko style figure. Good on him. The thing about guys like him is in our country they get punished fairly for their crimes. The same sort of guys in America just get to live it up even more and spit on the poor beneath them.
