Had a discussion with a couple of mates about this.

Rance's playing style in intercepts and meters gained reminds me a bit of Billy Slater.

More of an observation really, but thoughts?

Rance was the fullback of the comp for about the first 6 weeks of the season. the way he was showing confidence and attacking out of defense was fantastic, grimes going down really hurt him as he lost that backup he provided to come over the top if needed.

I agree. If we had of had Grimes playing the whole season, I reckon Rance would have been AA. The fact is, against taller, stronger opponents, Rance could make body contact, and have Grimes as a thrid man up, spoiling was what made our defence strong. When Grimes was out, Rance was monstered.

Can't wait for Chaplin to come in and take the monster forward leaving Rance to towel up the 2nd best forward both in contests and particularly on the rebound.

Really like Rancey but...Woowwweeeee Comparison to Billy the kid? I ****ing wish!! They both run and can intercept but I reckon the comparison stops there. Slater is a freak, Rancey has a while to go. :)

Slater is widely regarded as the best League player in the World. Not sure tross is quite at that level just yet!

I was thinking the very same thing City search. The prospect of getting a monster back is great for us but the potential impact on our back half is huge. With the tross playing no 2 & optimus playing No 3 and the run from the back of these 2 added to the run we already have could potentially be one of the most attacking defensive units in the AFL. Big call I know, but I genuinely believe It. :thumbsu:

This.

Some people are saying they don't want Chaplin because he has questionable disposal but you have to remember we already have some great rebounder types in Houli, Morris, Batchelor, Ellis, Newman and our KPD's like Grimes and Rance would be possibly some of the better rebounding key backs in the league. I think we can afford to have 1 shutdown key back - when he has the ball, he can dish it off to someone to set up the play.

Grimes is integral to our future prospects, hope his hammy can hold up. Rance will only get better too with more experience and maturity. I think it was mentioned at the JD Medal that we had the youngest defence in the whole league (and it held up largely for most of the season despite the injuries we copped). :thumbsu:

Agree!!

Let's have some constructive discussion here.

Apart from falling over, I don't feel easy with him with the ball ( third man). So not sure what to do with him?

Potentially lost onside nice here

He has a few flaws but most can be minimised by giving him certain roles that suit his rebounding skills (near elite when he's "on") and avoiding playing him deep in the backline as much as possible.

However if he doesn't overcome his biggest flaw - i.e. being the least balanced player in the history of League footy- I can't see how he can possibly have a long-term future at this level.
