Ali Kaya announces return to Turkey

Turkish legend Ali Kaya has stunned waiting media at a press conference in Giresun after announcing he was going to return home to Turkey, a place he had represented on 95 occasions, to take up a pittance contract over his 275,000 pound a week PSG contract. It was hard to fathom for many to understand, but it soon became clear as Turkish 1. League club Giresunspor were offering him a playing-coaching role and the challenge of trying to drag the club into the nation's top tier.

The German-born player/manager has been a global superstar over the past 14 years, with the 30 year-old still having a few years of top talent left. His obvious stardom is miles ahead of anyone in Turkey's second tier, but his main challenge will be to get the most out of his teammates and players at Giresunspor. If there was ever such a thing as a big fish in a small pond, it will be Kaya, whose value at PSG was nearing 80 million pounds, which dropped to 15 million pounds in Turkey. However with just 86,000 pounds the next highest in his team, expect player of opposition teams to plan tactical moves to stop the central midfielder.

While many believe his decision is a poor one, Kaya has aspirations of becoming a world class manager and this is the first step on his journey.

Giresunspor not so friendly in 6-0 belting

Ali Kaya's return to Turkey started in the best possible fashion, winning his opening friendly 6-0, having an assist as well as being a clinical player in the central midfield. Giresunspor never looked like losing and despite their attacking end generally being the weaker side, the movement through midfield to the final third was a joy to watch. It is expected to get even better with Kaya convincing PSG's French teenager David Guignard to join him at the Turkish club, with the 17 year-old to be the starting striker. While he is incredibly talented, he still has a long way to go before filling out his full potential. A much lower division should help him build his confidence and bang in plenty of goals.

The league started off slowly for Giresunspor, not able to find the back of the net against Mersin, and at half-time against Sanliurfaspor, Ali Kaya's side was still nil-all. But a change in tactics in the second half and Kaya instructing his newest player David Guignard to go for his shots more often, changed the entire match. Kaya himself had two assists and was damaging through the central midfield, while Guignard went on to score a hat-trick and be player of the match and month for the second tier league. In the days that followed Kaya managed to attract two more talented players at opposite ends of their career, to Giresunspor. Goalkeeper Ferdi Karaca is an 18 year-old Turkish keeper who was excited to work under and play alongside someone with the reputation of Kaya. Meanwhile 36 year-old Frenchman and left winger Thomas Lemar crossed from AS Monaco with Kaya using his contacts and close relationship with Monaco's new manager - his previous manager at PSG - to organise the switch. After all, Lemar had been a second choice left winger at the club and while the Turkish club was well below his level, his experience and potential move into management would convince Lemar this was the right move.​
