Does anyone know how good a coach he is ,because according to Hutchy on ch7 tonite ,he is firming as favorite to get the nod .I remember him as a player for one reaseon only & that was the king hit he delivered to that Carlton guy Aitken during that now infamous brawl during a post season game in London in 87' between N'Melb & Carlton .Broke his jaw if i remember rightly & during the same incident ,our own D'mac was busy belting the sh$t out of Rhys-Jones .

He coached Central District (SANFL) for 2 seasons, 1 premiership and 1 runner-up. Central people speak very highly of him. He left the club in 2003 to search for an AFL spot and has been an assistant at Port Adelaide for the past 2 seasons. Port Adelaide people speak well of him as well.

Im getting to the point where i dont really care who the coach is. Just please, Hawthorn get someone, so some duds can get the axe.

His records good. Flag for Centrals, made the Power midfield probably stronger than what it was (and that's with the loss of Primus and Francou).

Wasn't a bad player (nothing special but solid enough) either.

All up nothing in his C.V to suggest that he hasn't done an apprenticeship to at least worth serious consideration.

Prefer Creswell myself on a pure 'gut' feel though.

Based on what exactly??? was a ok to good footballer, never coached at any level let along AFL level and assumes a role behind Thompson at Geelong which is shared amongst 3 others.

Clarkson has a very handy CV not unlike to Shaun Rehn or a Mark Harvey to be honest his CV would be as good if not better than Harveys simply because he has been a head coach and led a side to a Flag.

Clarkson for me ahead of Ayres,Harvey,Rehn an co with Creswell about 600 metres of the straight.

Grendel the quality of your post are starting to dwindle rapidly, please mate get back to your old self :D .

cheers

Don't make the nice man angry......

Anyway, the trade period/draft is what? 10 DAYS after the grand final.
As much as I don't think we should appoint a coach before Don Scott's ticket (which I'm liking more and more all the time) who's going to do the trading and picking?

Read in "The AGE" today that half the board want an experienced coach.
I'm starting to think we should employ the "George Costanza" theory and do THE EXACT OPPOSITE of whatever this current board suggests.

If Don had his way we wouldn't appoint a coach until December after the EGM , how far behing the eight ball is that going to put the club??
We need a coach to be appointed asap so we can start the preparing for next year. Otherwise we have buckley's of enticing players from other clubs come trade time. The Bulldogs and Richmond are already moving forward planning for next year and we better get moving!

Don... grab your manbag and p*ss off back to the 70's , buddy!

I say this purely as an outsider looking in.....

Hawthorn seem to be in real trouble. You've had an ordinary year on field and your captain is in the middle of trade rumours. Your board and administration is all over the place and it appears things are going to get nasty before they get better.

Absolutely no offence to Alistair Clarkson, who I am sure would make a good coach, but wouldn't you guys be looking for someone of some experience who can come in and take over the coaching role and know what they are doing? Is Hawthorn really in a place where they can afford to let a coach 'settle in'??

I just wouldn't have thought so, I would have thought you'd need someone like Gary Ayers (seeing as he is the only really experienced coach left) who can at the very least try to take control of what's happening on field without having to learn the ropes, so to speak?

I truly hope the Hawks sort themselves out soon because they're a good club and their supporters deserve better.

I think that's pretty much the scenario that is being presented to the board. Experienced Coach Vs Rookie Coach. General opinion is that we should go for new blood and appoint a Rookie coach. There are pro's and con's for both and the decision will be interesting! For mine.....Clarkson

In my opinion part of Hawthorn's problem is that we have stagnated like a creek full of concrete, mainly due to the presence of ex-Hawthorn people. As a club we have become very insular in our thinking and approach to the game and it has cost us big time. Hawthorn needs a fresh approach and I don't think Gary Ayres would give us that. I would rather a new coach (and Clarkson seems as good as any other candidate) to come in with new ideas and new people.

You may have a point there but I would argue that Ayers, with his time at Geelong and Adelaide, may not be as 'Hawthorn' as it might appear.

You're right in the insular part though - I think it has been the undoing of Richmond over the past 20 years. You dont want to go down their path.

Maybe they should sign Ayres to a 1 year contract. (what are his options?)
We get the immediate experience we need and it still leaves the door open for Don et al to plan ahead.
