Hitting an all-time low
July 10 2002

Charleston, South Carolina: Minor League team the Charleston Riverdogs have taken the extraordinary step of locking fans out of Joe Riley Stadium in a bid to set the record for US professional baseball's lowest attendance.

The gates were padlocked and hundreds of fans gathered outside the main gate as everyone but Riverdogs employees, scouts and media were barred from entering on "Nobody Night".

The Riverdogs, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, continued their tradition of outlandish promotions, turning fans away and sending them to a party with discounted food and beer just outside the ballpark.

Hundreds of fans gathered outside, waiting to be let in once the game was declared official and the attendance was recorded as zero.

The Columbus Red Stixx beat the Riverdogs 4-2.
All the runs were scored before the fans were let in when the game became official in the fifth inning.

There is some dispute about the lowest attendance record, but it is believed to be the 12 people who braved a rainstorm to see Chicago defeat Troy on September 17, 1881.
