For some reason I have very little recollection of the year that A Jeans coached us. I was asked by someone today about it and I actually couldn't recall anything about his one year with us. I've been a tiger man for many years prior to that but have drawn a blank on that one year.

Can anyone fill in the blanks as to why only the 1 year and what happened for him to end it so quickly? Was that when he had a heart attack???

cheers

We made the pre-season cup grand final but we won a handful of games and not even the great man could turn us around. We made the
Had to pull the pin due to ailing health, but then again coaching Richmond in the 90s would sent a lesser man to his grave.
My theory is that while his health wasn't good, he decided that he didn't want his dignity squashed any further so the right thing to do was the pull the pin.

I went o his first coaching session with us.

He had to ask some other bloke everyone's name and I recall Stuart Edwards jogging through at the end of a drill and Jeansy dead set bellowed "dfon't fu##ing dawdle on MY track".

Edwards kicked 5 against the hawks that preseason game but we were never thereafter a threat.

He could yell, that bloke

sad to see that some things never change...

Round 3 Sun 5 Apr Geelong Skilled Stadium Loss 72-198

If nothing else, we have been consistent over the years

cheers

Seems other teams worked out about round 15 that they should tag Lambert.

A couple of one point losses, we were very stiff that yearr...

I think Tugga you might be one year too premature on that one.

it was John Northeys first year in 1993 that we played Essendon in the Grand Final. Boy did the Tiger Army turn out for that one. Havent we learned thats how you scare our players.

I think Jeans first Home and Away was a game at MCG where Tony Modra arrived and kicked 10 goals to claim a spot ahead of Scott Hodges.

Famously remember supporter being kicked out of the ground for ripping up his membership in front of the coaches box.

Yabby wasn't up to it. His health was not too good but I dont think you are wrong that he may have conceded that he was without the class that Hawthorn had put together. That tough constable in him just wasnt what it was during the eighties when he would throw Dipper against a wall and wrestle the players.

Asked to give an inspirtational speech to StKilda players and he said "The club that gets the best players wins the premiership"

Didnt think that was real inspirational.

I went to live overseas for a few years around that time so I did get muddled up a bit.
I remember the 1993 preseason GF though. Packed Waverley against the Bombers. Campbell kicking our first goal and the roar was the most deafening thing I have ever heard. I turned to my mate then and said 'Jesus, Imagine if we ever play off in the real one!'.

I made my way to Waverley for the game but actually never got in due to the crowd. Arrived just after the start with the queue still a mile long. Ended up heading back to "The Nott" and proceeded to drown my sorrows both during the game and afterwards. Ah memories...The Nott. :thumbsu:

And LMAO at bringing out a video of our season's 'highlights' in 1994, when we finished...wait for it...9th! They brought out a Tiger Tale for the 1995 season, but I also had the 1994 sent to me in London. I think they only made about three clubs' season's highlights videos in '94 and we were one of them for finishing 9th.

Me too...never got in.

It was so typical Richmond. A night that promised so much but ended in heartbreak and disappointment.

The story of our lives.

Will we ever win anything again( other than the spoon?

Great pub, great night, I still remember walking up wellington road, turning around and seeing a sea of headlights as far as the eye could see....

We got in, James Hird showed plenty of class in his first senior game and those Baby X&$%&s went on to win the flag.

Yabbie coached in 1992... it was the year after we sacked KB and it was following the Save Our Skins campaign to rescue the club in 1991.

Getting Jeans to the club was Graeme Richmond's last thing he wanted to achieve before his passing.

Adam Slater (yes THE Adam Slater) is a good friend of mine, and he was elevated along with around 8 other players from our Under 19s list that year (1991 was the last year of the U19s).

I tagged along with him to many training sessions, and I remember Boof Maxfield was his project player... if it wasn't for Yabbie, he wouldn't have played beyond that year... he made him the player he was and gave him the confidence and belief that he belonged at AFL level.

Someone mentioned his booming voice... I was at a training session when Flea Weightment scooped the ball up and ran off from Barry Young when what sounded like a Thunder Crack bellowed "CHASE HIM!!! HE'S TWICE YOUR AGE!". Scared the crap out of every player on the field.

Yabbie was in poor health for much of the year, but was instrumental in getting John Northey to the club as well as beginning the talks that resulted in Hoggy going to the Roys for M.Gale, Broderick and Dundas.

It was a rebuilding year, that's for sure!

In regards to the 93 Pre Season GF against the Bombers, a mate and I were stuck in the crawl all the way up Stud Rd and Wellington Rd. Listened to the 1st quarter on the radio before buddying up with someone in the AFL members to get in as "guests".

Although we lost, it was a great night.

From memory, Hoggy took a screamer and kicked our 1st goal... we were in it right up til 3 quarter time and couldn't really get close in the last.

My best memory in that series was the Semi Final game against the Lions, which was all tied up at the end of the game... it went to extra time (5 mins each way) and Todd Menegola marked and kicked truly with a minute left to win the game.

:)THAT was my biggest memory of Yabby's reign too, his promotion of Maxfield to on-baller and giving him the confidence to become a good AFL player. I was never a fan of Stuey til that point, but he won me over.

I also remember the press conference to announce the new coach. We were sponsored by the TAC at the time and not long after they introduced the "If you drink and drive you;re a bloody idiot". I remember the photo in the Herald Sun and Age the next day ran a picture of Yabby underneath the slogan, but they cropped out the "If you drink and drive" but and all that was visible was "you're a bloody idiot", smack bang above his head!!!

*In 1992 we finished 13th
*Knighter won B&F
*Hoggy won goalkicking with 45 which was not a bad effort considering the ball was never down there and he often played full back after half time. In fact he kicked 68 under KB the year before, at a decent side he would've kicked 80+!!!!
*In Round 11 we smashed Brisbane at the G and Stevan Jackson kicked 6 on Matty Campbell
*We beat Carl in round 15 at VFL Park and Cambo had 41 possessions and 4 goals from the wing as a 19 year old
*Dunstall had 29 possies, 18 marks and kicked 17.5 in Round 7 at Waverley (I was there and we followed him from end to end - he kicked a further 12 against us in R22) Sam Newman spoke to Stephen Lawrence on 3AW after the game and the interview was a pisser
*Some players who played that year
-Brad Gwilliam (cheer squad sponsored him and he did his knee)
-Terry Keays (tryed to take hangers - kicked 7 v Dogs the year before)
-Robert Walker (had hair slicked back like Trent Nichols once did)
-Bruce Lennon (had South Aussie mullett, wore #5)
-David Honybun (lived with the current Victoria Minister for Planning)
-Stewart Griffiths (was 22 going on 42)
-Matty Francis (always injured, built like Ricky Petterd but tryed to play key position)
-Craig Smith (very skilful but always injured - I vaguely remember the club trying to find him a job by advertising him in The Fighting Tiger)
-Allister Scott (tryed to play full forward, he took a hanger once at the G)
-Ian Herman (from Carlton, he got Chris Bond to the club, who in turn got Brad Ottens to the club who in turn got Danny Meyer and Adam Pattison to the club)
