Is Mark Alvey the softest player to play for this club since Mark Cullen.I think he is.

Peter Rhode(cheap as chips) 2.1 and not looking the goods,
:p

All teams have softer type players on their lists. Its how they make up for it that counts. Remember Hudson in his day. When he kicked his 2 or 3 goals a week no one really worried about how soft he was.
Now compare Alvey to Eagleton. Both seem lacking in the hardness dept but Alvey kicks both feet, finishes off his goals, runs with the ball and makes space and does some of the kicking out from full back. Eagleton on the other hand does none of this.
there are also a few others that would slip in somewhere between these 2.

Exactly, Alvey is soft but at least has got plenty of the ball and uses it well. We can afford to have a player or two like Alvey, everyone does, it's just that we have about 6 of them.

Mark Cullen was an out and out dud. Mark Alvey is at least 10 times a better player.

But can we afford Alvey on the wing? If he won't get within the same postcode as his opponent (as one Age scribe described him after the Richmond game), then can we afford a shootout between him and his opponent? How many times did he deliver perfectly inside 50 over the past 2 weeks? How many times did his opponent?

I don't know the answers BTW. But my attitude towards Alvey has changed since I was critical of him last season - I don't like his style of play and would prefer he was dropped until he understands his defensive responsibilities.

seriously I could get 15 kicks a game if I waited in space on the wing for someone in the backline to win the ball and kick it to me.

alves is a star he gets the ball tho who cares if he is weak like a feather but his ball skils a brillant

Gnome? What kinda name is that?

Rhodes did some good moves in the last 10 minutes.....

:D

Alvey is lucky to be in the side this week. If it was between him and Eagleton, the only reason he kept his spot is because he has been getting around 20 posessions a game (even though he does only receive it). He doesn't seem to have worked on his weaknesses at all whereas Eagleton has. This is why i have little patience for him.

Wasn't too much trouble with his weaknesses when he was in good form last year. He has gone out laying a tackle against the Dons.

:(

Exactly mo7.
Gilbs should be his replacement.

How ironic to do his knee vs essendon.

Alveys worth more then that IMHO, but I suppose a fair bit of it was to do with finances. Wasn't Alves only offered a one year contract?

The offer wasn't an additional pick - the trade was an 'upgrade' of 8 picks in the third round, which would have proven friggen useless - we would have still taken Murphy and Bassett, only a little earlier (28 and 33 instead of 33 and 35).

On a side note: If he doesn't get traded, we have to stick by him IMO - last year he had the option to walk and go into the pre-season draft (leaving us with no compensation), but despite being offered less money, less security and looking at less game time than he would have got at another club, still signed on. Even if it's just a base contract, we should do the right thing by him at least until he's back up and running.

I agree with you mo7.The poor guy is out for the rest of the year with a knee injury and if he was to leave hed be free to since he is out of contract.I think gilbee will come into the side as his replacement.

Get Well Soon Alves

Right, last season when alvey was killing it everyone was praising him what a hero, this year, the dogs start to lose a few games and we all gotta blame someone.

Alvey is not soft, he goes in when there is a contest around, he puts his body on the line and how did he do his knee???? Laying a tackle i believe.

I hope Alves is with us next season and its such a shame to see him out for the rest of the season

See ya back on the field soon Alves!!
