I went and watched the match yesterday and i have now developed a love for alwyn davey! (im sure im not the only one!) This kid is gunna be an absolute champ.. He is so quick, tackles hard and can set something up out of nothing. My question is though how come it took him so long to get drafted??

Probably deemed too small and not commited enough. They seem to be the excuses clubs use when they have overlooked a gun numerous times. Anyway, hopefully he can be a gun. If he is anything close to his brother (before this year), he will be a star.

I think he played a few years up North and only came to the SANFL last year...?? Also (like Lovett), South Adelaide were at Davey to work on his DEFENSIVE component of his game !! (can you beleive it!)

He's doing exceptionally well, the real test for him is will he be able to back it up next season. Seemed not that long ago that Adrian McAdam burst onto the scene....the opposition worked him out, and thus ended his career as quick as it began. Cant fault his endeavour, but personally prefer to hold back a little before labelling him a future star. Daniel Wells springs to mind in recent times as another aboriginal not to live up to expectations.

Not sure he will become a 'star' as such, but a very, very handy player. I know it's been said a thousand times, but his defensive pressure is second to none. Sets up more than twice as many goals as he actually kicks.

Those runs of his give me the shivers.

I don't normally post on team boards, but.... the real test for him is to remain a competitive small forward. The small forward role is one of the most challenging in the game, and although he's had a great start to his career, undoubtedly when he falls off the radar or gets out of form, he'll add very little to the team structure and a lot of his forward pressure may only generate marginal returns, like many specialist small forwards. The key thing with Davey is to presist with him when he does generate sub-standard returns, or to build his "midfield fitness/engine" up so that he can move into the midfield and use his pace to be an effective line-breaker for the Dons.

Very interesting thoughts Greedy, but its a bit early to predict what else he can offer the "team structure".

Personally,I've never been more excited about an aboriginal player at Essendon since Dean Rioli. Now Deano let me down more than he lifted me to great heights, but Davey is small, light and (pray to Jesus) fast enough to avoid heavy contact. Something Deano lacked.

Davey ain't no Wanganeen, but he's the most desperate player with his attack on the man and the ball atm at EFC. And he's only played a handful of games!

Time will tell but....

Has anyone noticed how he's improving each game and taking more risks.

He seems to be getting a lot more confidence and feeling comfortable at the top level.

The goal yesterday was fantastic - though he was buggered by after he kicked it.

i'm in love with him, its actual love, he gets the ball and something happens to me, i cant explain it......the new michael long

the sad thing about blokes like davey is as they get older - they get slower
and once that blistering pace is gone they become just another skinny small man..... is aaron davey suffering a little this season of this ???

lets just enjoy alwynn for as long as we can !!!! outstanding in the first half

huge fan of FROGGY

Would love to see a video compilation of his tackles this year that have resulted in turn-overs---goals. He seemes to do one a week.

only thing is can he keep it going longer than 3 years.... most of the aboriginal players only have 3 years of brilliance

I love the exicitment he generates every time he's near the ball.

His chasing strikes the fear of doubt into opponents, some of them panic even if he is a fair way away.

Consistancy will be the key, but i reckon we could have found ourselves a player.

As long as he keeps applying himself and chasing hard - he has a spot - a quick defensive midfielder that cn apply tremendous pressure is worth their weight in gold.

Don't underestimate what pressure or perceived pressure can do - turnovers are much more likely.

And some bloke who plays for the Crows.....Andrew I think his name is! ;)

different type of player.... im talking the small, flashy, skillful, quick, skinny ones, like Lovett, Davis, Sampi, just off the top of my head... all arent as good as when they burst onto the scene

just what im saying.... some of those aboriginal boys who's main asset is pace loose it after a few years, and then they struggle to maintain a long career

Are we living in such a world where you cant even disginuish between different gorups of people anymore? Its also a fact of life that people with black skin have different body composition of that of the white man. allowing them to run, jump, turn better and quicker than white guys

did i ever once say that we WILL only get 3 years out of him? and listen CU..NT who the FU.CK are you to go accusing people of being racist, its a well known fact. just like the fact the African-Americans play ball better than white guys.... oops would want to be racist.

McLeod and Wanganeen arent even full aboriginal you di.ck!

Ha ha ha. Why don't you lose your head over it then! :D

You made the generalisation that you only get three years of brilliance from an Aboriginal player and its just a ridiculous statement that deserves to be booed down by anyone who reads it. You've embarrassed yourself mate.

There's plenty of Aboriginal players that have given more than three years of brilliance you clown.
Here's a few examples I can think of in 10 seconds:
Daryl White
Micky O'Laughlin
Dale Kickett
Derek Kickett
Peter + Sean Burgeoyne
Michael Mclean
Gilbert McAdam
Maurice Rioli
Nicky Winmar
Krakours x3 (Phil, Jimmy and now Andrew) and Nathan looks like he will be a good player...might night see the best of him if he's only got 3 years tho!
Do I need to go on.....

By the way, you would get kicked all over the park if you went up to McLeod or Wanganeen and questioned their aboriginal heritage mate. Doesn't matter if they are not full aboriginal.

oh, and Larry Bird could play a bit of ball for a whitey.

Thanks for the personal abuse too, I've reported your post. :D

1.10seconds? take you 10 second to write each one...

2.those players were flashy were they? for thier whole career? nope!

3.If one parent is not aboriginal are you full aboriginal? nope!

4.Larry bird? haha, take michael jordan, kareem abdul jabbar, wilt chamberlain, Magic johnson... not even tip of the ice berg

5. Is mummy consoling you?

I actually agree on this one, its a very valid point. Maybe its just that the aboriginal boys loose their pace, or just burn out, or cant susstain the hits from the big bodies in AFL

don't make me laugh.
The changes of getting "hit" in the AFL is so slight these days. Channel 10 struggled to feature 5-7 tackles in its - most of which involved Alwyn and the slick Brazilian Harry O'Brien.

It is a recruitment fallacy that you need to go for height. Most of today's game is uncontested. All you need is a strong lead to take a mark out front on your chest or overhead you absolutely don't need to be a loping dinosaur who splits the packs.

Neale Daniher made some great comments on Before the Game about why noone picked Aaron Davey up in the draft. He said that most clubs looked at Leon Davis' performance in the Grand Final against the Lions and turned their nose up at small quick indigenous players. That was until a little guy called Aaron Davey set the league on fire of the rookie list. While Aaron has dropped a bit, I think it is as much laziness as anything - he is still capable of the odd freakish pace and skill. I am just dissapointed that after Alwyn training with them in the pre-season that the Demons didn't decide to have both Daveys on their list. :(

Sheedy knows it is all about pace, pace, pace ! The evolution of our game is such that the next generation of players will be built like Gaelic Footballers. Mostly short, quick and highly skilled.

I can't believe you listed your inept response as points 1-5. haha. Go have a lie down mate, you will feel better. :D
