I am American, living in Thailand for maybe 12 years now. I get ABC as part of cable package at my condo, so get 4 games a weekend usually. First time I recall seeing (or hearing of) Aussie rules was back in early '60's. ABC (American Broadcasting Company) has Saturday program "Wide World of Sports" which actually did go around the world (unlike US World Series.... haha) and they showed film of some game. I thought "Wow, that looks like lots of fun" (I was 12 I think).
Been watching here now for perhaps 4 years (Sat dish used to have did not cover footy). When I signed up the filter question is: "Who won grand final 2013?". Would have had to google if didn't remember. Also noted I was required to name a favorite club. That is difficult, as not being from your parts, don't have home town, family, mates, etc to influence me. Experiment to see if one can be fan of a sport without developing a favorite side. I put down Port Power because been doing well and like underdogishness.
Visited your fine country in 97, doing Oz backpacker trip from Melbourne to Adelaide. Recall stopping into some "hotel" and sipping a few with locals whilst they explained the game. Bring back the white rats, or was it lab rats.....
Anyway, love the game, was watching today and wondered about description to the unknowing: organized chaos? planned chaos? Has all the best elements of other team sports with few of the negatives. One thing did dawn on me a week or two ago: it is still fun to watch even when a side is getting blown out, which I think is rare.
