Great performance last night, but one gripe.

Do we really need poxy Americanised gimmicks (apologies Stealth) like the "Let's Get Loud" sh!t after every goal we kick? I hate it

I realise it's all about "entertainment". Call me old fashioned, but i thought the FOOTY was the entertainment. I wonder if the people who dream up these ingenious ideas actually sit there and watch what they've created  Bloody embarrassing.

We have a great team, we don't need stupid gimmicks. Leave it to the likes of Richmond and the Bullies. Some will disagree, but i find the Americana (apologies again, Stealth) creepin into our game is really annoying. "Let's Get Loud? It's ********e!
P!ss it off!!!!
I'll shut up now.

where's wally?

Thought up by the same people who decided that our club song wasn't modern enough and paid Mike Brady $25,000 to butcher it for it's one and only playing before the complaints started to roll in

No offense taken here. That was profoundly disappointing and embarrassing. Jennifer Lopez is a giggly no-talent tart; I don't wanna see her mug every time we kick a goal.

I think our teenybopper stereotype image is sadly becoming justified. I was sitting amongst a lot of Hawthorn supporters last night and I was looking at this stuff on the screen and thinking "oh this is awful". The most-oft comment heard was "this ain't a f-ckin' basketball game!"

My girlfriend thought up a good idea - maybe this has been done before - why not play a big jet noise after a goal and show a bomber plane flying towards the screen or something? It's a bit more symbolic, and I think quite intimidating.

Max,
Let's hope this latest "innovation" goes the same way as the "updating" of our club song. In the bloody rubbish bin!

where's wally?

Bl00dy oath. The sooner it's pissed off the better.

walks off muttering...rassn frassn .....marketing gurus....rassn frassn.....should shoot the bl00dy lot of them.

My 1.025 US cents....

I've been an Ess member all my life. Until last year. (yeah, i know - bad year to not renew it - but i still got into the GF thanks to a mate who lined up for a couple of days.....a fellow life member who had to line up DAYS before hand to get a couple of seats that just happened to be up the top of the Southern. (all whilst the hangers on and rich "dinner guests" who scammed their free GF ticket are all enjoying the decent seats....) What a great reward for being a member all your life. Hence, my decision to not renew my membership. What's the point.)

but anyway....

Jennifer Lopez!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

This makes me glad that i didn't renew my membership. It's that kind of thing that is ruining football and i'm not going to support people who want to kill our game. Simple.

How many other people are Essendon (and the AFL) going to alienate? 52,000 seat stadium? What happens when Essendons membership numbers get above 40,000 ??

Why would anyone WANT to be a member? And i'm not talking about the people who have mindlessly renewed it every year. More the people who are looking to join. There is no point anymore. The game's out of their reach now.

The day the AFL and the clubs see the light and rediscover what football is about is the day i renew my membership.

Get a clue people. The game's stuffed. edit: when i say "people", i mean those running it. Those who think that playing Jennifer Lopez after a goal could possibly be a good thing. Just shows how little clue they have.

gPhonque. (who just wants to stand in the outer.....is that so much to ask?)

(also, in case you're wondering "if you despise the game so much, why did you go to the Grand Final?" - the reason i went to the GF is i still love the Essendon Footy Club. It's just a shame the same can't be said about the people who run everything anymore. Sorry, had to get this off my chest. Jennifer Lopez????????? Couldn't they even get somebody with perhaps a tiny bit of talent?? What's the next great innovation we're going to see? Cheerleaders? Tina Turner at the Grand Final.....? Oh, and there's another thing - the pre Grand Final "entertainment" last year could hardly be described as such......at the time, i even found the Herald-Sun more interesting.....)

Ok. I think i'm finished now.

simple answers to both questions

first, when essendon gets over 40,000 members there will be over 40,000 essendon members in colonial stadium instead of 36,000

also remember that not all members are going to turn up on the one game, its simple, if your an essendon member you will get in

and as for why would anyone want to be an essendon member, simple again, to be part of the most exciting, most powerful and soon to become the most feared team in the competition

You DO realise that it's most likely your membership money paying the wages of the people who are making these decisions to change the club song, play "J-Lo" after goals, move to a smaller (ugly, concrete, lifeless, dull) stadium.....etc etc etc. ?? Not to mention topping up the bank accounts of a bunch of guys (not naming names but i'm sure there's a few) who would probably jump ship if they ever got a deal from another club that the Bombers couldn't match.....(unlikely anyway...)

I'll keep my money in my wallet and watch them on TV. (Now, we can only hope Channel 9 change the on screen timeclock so that it counts UP and not down......) :)

Go Bombers.

gPhonque.

there are two types of footy fans

barrackers- who feel free to hold opinions of clubs, players and take up bragging rights

and there are
supporters - true fans of the clubs, the ones that pay money to see their team, through good and bad, at the mcg, colonial or wherever

if you loved essendon as much as u say u do, for the sake of 100 dollars a year you would buy a membership and keep supporting essendon, im happy to pay my money to whoever gets it, and keep supporting essendon football club, because to see those boys on sat night, as far as im concerned thats money well spent

there are two types of footy fans

Yeah. Those who love football, and those who pay their membership and think they know everything about football. (and football supporters).

Wake up. Just because YOU have renewed your membership the past 2 years, it doesn't mean that the fact i was a member for 15 years is now irrelevant.

See. You think you know everything about football supporters all because you have renewed your membership.

I'm not telling you to stop. It's your choice.

The FACT is, there are a LOT of unhappy FOOTBALL fans at the moment. I am one of them. And, according to you, the fact i'm not a member anymore means i apparently don't love, or know anything about football.

Not a very strong argument i must say.

In case you can't work this out, we BOTH love football. I wouldn't be here talking about it if i didn't care about where the game was heading. The only difference is that i'm not going to keep giving my money to the people who are ruining it.

I don't WANT to pay to hear bloody J-Lo every time a goal is scored. I don't WANT to go and sit in the most lifeless stadium ever built. I don't WANT to give my money to a club that is as far up it's own arse as Essendon.

But, that doesn't simply erase the fact that i spent close to every weekend going to watch them in rail, hail or shine; standing on milk crates when i was little, waving my flag, cheering when we won the 84-85 flags (and 93 of course), having a kick on Windy Hill after the game etc etc etc.

It's like Australia. You love the country, but you hate the people running it.

And according to your logic, that would mean i don't love Australia.

This is just my little protest. Go and get on with your little life and leave me be. I was just throwing my 2c in on where the game is going. I wasn't asking to be accused of not loving the EFC.

Oh, and make sure you keep your CityLink account topped up while you're at it. We don't want all those rich people to miss out on our money now do we? (get my point yet?)

cheers.
gPhonque.

The AFL has banned it today, so who ever was there on Saturday witnessed it for the first and last time.

Still probably will be used pre game and during the breaks though.

Walshy, you may not agree with gPhonque (I know I've had arguments with him before - remember -BEN gPhonque? :) ), but if he's decided to forgoe a membership as a protest at the way footy is moving you have to respect him for doing so. It cant be an easy thing to do.

gPhonque, I think you're being a little harsh on the players saying most of them would jump ship at a larger offer, particularly given Hirds' decision last year and what Lloyd said after he re-signed about the players agreeing as a group to stay together.

Like you I didn't want them to move to Colonial, but if the board think it will help ensure the clubs survival then so be it. Given the sprial of player salaries & the ever increasing cost of running a footy club I think they did the right thing. Would you prefer they'd said bugger the money (1 mill/year) and end up 10 years down the track in the same boat as North are now? Unlikely I know, but still a possibility. From your post you sound like you'd remember the seventies pretty well (ahh those were the days, cold pies in the pissing rain on the hill!) . Do you think we'd be pulling the same crowds/money if we were performing like that? And make no mistake, there will be years like those again. You don't stay on top forever (hint, enjoy it while we can boys 'n' girls!).

The other thing I find confusing is that you say you prefer to watch it on telly. TV is exactly what is stuffing the game. You'd be better off going to the game & boycotting the telly IMO, particularly as there are still 9 games at the 'G. But each to their own I 'spose.

Anyway, from what Max said and what I glimpsed on the news, J-LO is history, thank you AFL, for once a good decision.

lol Yeah. That was funny.

And actually, just to keep it going for a sec, i notice Trevor Marmalade (of all people) mentioned something about "all the dodgy decisions in the 2nd Test in India" to Shane Warne on the Footy show the other night......and Warne certainly didn't correct him with his response.......lol

But was that an argument or a discussion though? ;)

Yeah, I'm probably being a little harsh. But you still know what i mean. Hopefully they'll all prove me wrong anyway. :) (could you imagine if they are able to keep this group of players together? Man......)

Yeah, well, last year i DID boycott the telly as well. I basically switched off from AFL all together. But it's a bit harder this year. Although i was able to go to the GF last year, i still felt like i missed the season completely. (which i did.) So yeah, i guess that i can't help it this year. Gotta see them. (damn it's good to watch.)

If i don't watch it on TV, then i'm not going to the game. For the simple reason in that i just don't enjoy it anymore. It used to be fun. I liked the "no frills" feeling about going to Windy Hill, Western Oval, Vic Park even. Football never used to have all the crap you get now because it didn't need it. The only reason the (getting back to the topic) Americans play music is because their games need something to make them more entertaining. (not to say that i don't enjoy NBA, NFL etc.) But AFL footy shouldn't need it. All these changes (rules, music etc etc) are taking the game further and further away from what it used to be. And people need to remember that what it used to be, what it was everybody grew to love over the past 100 years, was VFL footy. And nothing else. The "peoples" game. Good old "footy". Didn't you used to enjoy that? Aren't you annoyed that you can't watch footy like that anymore? Because it ********s me. And that's why i don't go. If i want to sit down quietly in my vision impared seat and be entertained, i'll go to a tennis match. If i want to hear J-Lo, i'll turn on Channel 10. (i know you said it's being stopped but only until the next great marketing ploy arrives....whether it be from the AFL, or the clubs, or tv.....)

Like I said, the day it becomes "footy" again is the day i renew my membership. (hopefully Essendon's 'holier than thou' attitude will have disappeared by that day too. That's if there ever is a "that day".)

cheers. :)

I am sorry but you are pathetic, I live in perth but still take out my membership even though I only get to a couple of games each year.
If everyone had your attitude the Bombers & every other club would go the same way as Fitzroy & South Melbourne.
Stop worrying about what the club can do for you and ask what can I do for the club.

ok....

A) it's gPhonque. Not g phone que. It's right in front of you. It's not that hard. You don't even have to put in the capital "P" if you don't want to either. But if you're going to call me pathetic, then at least have the decency to spell my name right.

B) Is it also really that hard to understand what i'm saying? Did you used to live in Melb? Did you used to actually go to Windy Hill, and all the old little suburban grounds? If you did, (i'm not saying you didn't), then you would know that it's not the same anymore. (right?) So is it really that hard to believe that somebody who used to love going to those old little grounds could be angry, and upset at where the AFL has gone? Why would i want to pay for something that i don't particularly like anymore? (and that goes for the attitude of the EFC in general. Although Sheedy is almost worth paying membership money for alone.)

and...

C) Shut up anyway. I'm not telling you to drop your membership. I'll do as i please. Thankyou very much for your concern.

Go Bombers.

LOL!, mate with -BEN everything's an argument.

On the other stuff, yeah it pissed me off that footy's not quite what it used to be, but I don't think they've moved that far away (on field anyway). The increase in skill level is phenominal - I still chuckle looking at tapes of 84/85 compared to today, even if some of the physicality is gone. I suppose I'm lucky in that I still play/go to suburban matches as well and so get to enjoy the old fashioned stuff there.

As I said, I respect you for standing up for what you believe in even if I don't agree with it. Hopefully you'll be back on board soon.

Sandie/Walshy, you may not agree with his decision, but that's his right. He's not telling us to drop our memberships so lay off with the criticism ok?

Always the voice of reason Dave.

The R & B Avenger wants his title back...lol.

Keep it up mate! I enjoy reading your posts! :D

Aaaww shucks

It's good to see a few more Dons fans here, we need to welcome them, not scare them away!!

R&B Avenger! ROFLMAO!!!!!!

Yeah Dave...especially with all the anti-Essendon tripe going on over at the main board. I think we need all the help we can get!

Now BSA has joined in on the party and everyone is now lining up to suck his d!ck.

What a sad, sad bunch of individuals. The 'tall poppy syndrome' is on in earnest! :o

Yeah, pretty disappointed , as TG would say "poor effort that". The again, maybe I shouldn't be so surprised given his/her comments about us being soft earlier in the season.

Anyway, if they want to crap on they can, to hell with them. I'm just sitting back enjoying our teams form. And hopefully a few beers with Grendel one of these days. One of the few "voices of reason" around.

Dave - lol -BEN did actually tell me privately that he only raves about Gilly 'cos he knows how much it sh!ts everybody. And good on him. :D My kind of guy. But that's not to say that we didn't have a damn good point though....... :D

And thankyou for understanding why i'm not a member anymore. Like you said, it wasn't easy, especially knowing my team was playing the best football ever played, :) and that's why i have to watch it on tv now. (which is damn near impossible anyway because they zoom so bloody close all the time......we'll cross our fingers and pray Ch 9 won't do the same.......although judging by the way they 'follow' the ball down the pitch in their cricket coverage, then i'm guessing they're going to totally screw up the footy too.)

Hopefully you'll be back on board soon.

Mate, if we weren't at Colonic, i just might be.

It's good to see a few more Dons fans here, we need to welcome them, not scare
them away!!

Scare me away? Come on....you should know me better by now. :D

(is there a killfile option here though....? lol)

cheers.

warning, soap box alert ,warning!

Ha! If -BEN didn't go so OTT with everything he posts I might just believe that. Still, posting simply to piss people off gets boring after a while, particularly when that's all he talks about. That and what a dirty mongrel Joe Misiti is.

No sweat about the rest, one of the things you learn as you grow older (damn, about to get older again. Bugger) is that there is a wonderously varied mix of people populating our fair land and not all of them will be the same as you (bloody good thing, life'd be boring to the max if they were) and that if you don't want to make enemies everywhere you turn you have to learn to respect their opinions even if they differ from yours. It's not always easy but it's one of the reasons why we don't have them mindless violence that we see so often overseas. Intolernce of others opinions is the first step down the path of violence. /steps off soap box/

On nein, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. The anouncement last week on what they'll show in NSW/QLD shows they'll be no better than ch $even.

And yeah, scare was probably the wrong word. What I was getting at was not to make people feel unwelcome. We're copping enough sh1t on the main board without dishing it out to each other here ;)

And no, unfortunately, no KF here. :(

by a membership and you wont have to imagine it, you will be able to see it first hand

and also if you enjoyed the old windy hill days, which im sure all essendon fans did and wish they still could, get down to windy hill and follow the VFL side
there is a great bunch of kids out there, their ability and commitment is amazing, well worth the 8 bucks or whatever they charge to get in (i think its free if your a member ;) )

just one other thing, you say that you wont by a membership because it doesnt particually interest you anymore, but surely if it didnt interest you anymore you wouldnt be here talking about it

essendon is the greatest team in the competition, but its only going to remain there if all our supporters get behind the club, i wasnt doubting your love of the club, and your 15 years as a member, but for the sake of just over 100 bucks how about making it 16 years as a member
