In the 1980 Grand Final, as you mournfully remember, Bartlett kicked seven goals. He played on the rugged defender, Stan Magro. Magro was a tough player, who liked to take out his opponent on countless opportunities. So.

It was unlike Magro not to escort Bartlett out of the game. I don't know for a fact, but I have heard rumours that Hafey told Magro (before the game) not to hit Bartlett, as you may know Hafey and Bartlett are best of mates....still are to this day.

Do you think my wording has logic behind it?

Magro was a tough, hard straight ahead player. He wasn’t a thug. Hafey left Magro on Barlett and Ireland on Cloke. Don’t get me started on Hafey…

Do I sense animosity?
I used to love the guy and was bitterly disappointed when he was sacked. Now that I am older and wiser I know he was a great motivator and player man but very limited and his limitations cost us premierships. He was clearly out coached in 1977 between the 2 GF’s and during the second GF and made some blues in latter GF’s as well. Great bloke but limited coach. He coached a super team at Richmond. He got a lot out of a lot of Collingwood players but when up against the best he was found wanting.
