Decided to head into the "cage" on saturday night to see Andrew gaze break the all-time record for most NBL games played. Was a great night and Timmons and Copeland were on fire.Ive always admired Andrew Gaze as a Australia's greatest basketball player but a few things stood out during the night.
-Gaze is one of the dirtiest players ive ever seen.when he attacks the basket off the dribble he leaves his fore-arm out trying to get a foul, when he is defended well(which he was on sat night,he only had about 10 points)he gets fustrated and will just charge into his opponent, and because of his "star" status he continually got the calls.it was ridiculous.i hope this was just a bad night for the refs because cairns just didnt have a chance.there was one instance where gaze was on defence and off the ball he dragged his opponent down ,then fell down with him and somehow got the call.Ive been to several games in townsville and saw rose and rucker get good calls but it was nothing like the red-carpet treatment gaze was receiving from the referees.Maybe it was a once-off,but i doubt it.
-whilest cairns were shooting free-throws there was a buzzing/beeping noise made just as they shot the ball.I know the crowd can be be used to distract the opponents and that is part and parcel of playing the game, but using a electronic noise has to be illegal.
-no alcohol????....no wonder crowds are down when you cant have a beer and watch the game.Only the corperate "boxes"at the front got served beer.I couldn't believe it.you have to go out side the main court and to a bar to have a beer, and you cant see the game.....
Other than that it was a great night, the cage has a good atmosphere for basketball and well done to gaze on his milestone, but i must say I lot a bit of respect for him on saturday night.
