How do Cat fans rate the progress of Andrew Mackie ?
It's going to be a difficult team for a player like him to get a regular senior spot in but is the type of player that is likely to make it ?
What position is he likely to settle into ?

Very happy with his progress. He is probably ahead of schedule, but still has a stack of scope.
He showed some amazingly good signs this year, including kicking 3 goals in a quarter on Leigh Colbert, but then injury hit.

He'll definitely be a regular next year. He is in the top 3 at the club for sheer talent, so that combined with his uncanny ability around goals will see him play more often than not.

As for position, i think his career may well be similar to that of Leigh Colbert. In the first half of his career he will be a flanker who can even run through the middle should we need some class there, and later in his career will play as a courageous key position player.
He's never going to have a big body, but he has good hands, courage and most importantly, a truckload of talent.

He was showing a fair bit in the seniors, kicked 3.1 in the first quarter against North, before being knocked into 2005 by King or Archer (?)

I think he should be able to get into the team easy enough. He would be competing with Gardiner and Haynes for a spot in the team, two solid players, but Mackie is in a completely different class.

Next year he will play HFF, if he can bulk up maybe CHF.

He was a relatively unknown when we drafted him so early but it looks like paying off.

Took a risk in drafting him so early at no.7 in 2002 when you consider we could've got some like Byron Schammer, Jay Schulz or Jared Rivers.

If he bulks up a bit he'll go alright. Reminds me of a lanky Leigh Colbert when he was first at the club.

Top 3 for talent is a big call, but I would probably not disagree (like the non-comittal double-negative there?). For what it's worth, I would count Ablett and Kelly as the two most talented players on our list.

I was in the pub on Monday and the game against Port in about round 10 was being replayed on Fox. I saw Mackie get a couple of touches and run with the ball, and he just looks the goods - fluent stride, clean hands and pretty good disposal. He's obviously a naturally gifted player, I just hope he's chowing down on the chicken breasts and busting his guts in the gym this summer. Add 5 kilos to that frame and you've got yourself a top-line player. I would like to have him as a regular part of our forward line, which I hope looks like this:

HF: Mackie McCarthy S Johnson
FF: Chapman Ottens Kingsley

(Gazza on the ball, changing with Chapman)

Jay Schulz? We could have had Jay Schulz? Heads must roll........ :D

Gardiner, Haynes and Mackie will all be competing for 2 spots in the forwardline. Personally i think mackie has is the best of those 3 so hopefully he will cement a spot in the 22.
As his career progresses he will gradually put on more weight and play in a chf/ff role

I know. He has done better than Mackie so far including 8 marks and 6 goals against the Lions.

but don't panic Mackie may be the better player yet :p

Might as well call him Foreplay , hes taking a while getting there but one does feel that the wait will be worth it.

He has more skill than most on our list at his height. He delivered the ball well and is brave backing into packs. Must learn to pick up some easy posessions but has the tools to be a major player in 05

If we call him 'Foreplay' do we call David Spriggs 'Premature' ? He came on quickly, but never rose to those early heights again. ;)

Mackie is a good chance of becoming a regular half forward next year. He's got more goal sense than Charlie & Des and he's courageous and has good handball skills. He's a bit of a Darren Milburn type player - not considered a KPP,but could have the odd run there.

It is odd that he kicked 13 goals in 13 senior games this year but didn't kick 1 goal in the VFL.

Good one J. The thing on the no goals in the V's. Is a better player with quality around him. I still feel this is why he failed to impress while spending time there.
Milburn ehh. Sort of I supose. Dasher always had the hard edge to his game, the enjoyment of body contact etc. that Mackie probably doesnt but I know what you mean. Not a tall, not a small.Probably has better ball skills than dasher. His set shots are.. well ordinary but I feel the truck could be quite set shot shark.

Thanks for all the replies. I think Mackie will be a good player for the cats in the next 2 seasons it was just trying to gauge his likely true playing position that had me tricked.

I'm not sure why but I thought that some of the Cats fans had some serious doubts about his ability and potential at the start of 2004.

I think supporters had every right to doubt Mackie early this year before he got a game. He was in his second year at the club and hadn't played a game after being taken at pick 7. And he really hadn't shown much in the VFL (or so i've heard). However, once he started playing in the seniors, all that doubt was washed away.

I think he will be great, he has great courage, shame he nearly gets killed because of his size, he does remind me of Jade Rawlings(sorry to bring him into it) but when he started he was built like a pull through for a rifle, but now goes well, i believe mackie will be better than him, he just needs some time. at least with otto, kent and others he will not need to carry the forward line and can slip under the radar a bit. I look forward to seeing him progress and i guess with graham gone players such as him will get more of an oppurtunity.

There were some with queries over why he was being hidden by the club.

Only one poster thought he wasn't up to it, but there were others who had reservations (moreso about the motives of the club).
