Where's this guy at?...

from memory he was our first pick in the 2002 draft...and dare i say he has delivered nothing...been in and out of the team and the idea of him developing into a key forward appears to have been scrapped.

thoughts?

I'd get rid of him at the end of the year if he doesnt do anything. If it was 2002, then hes had plenty of time to put muscle on and develop. Picked up from nowhere and dont think we need him

Our very own version of Jared Brennan.

Does SFA for 8 weeks, shows a bit to suggest he might become a player, and then does SFA for another 6 weeks.

Who knows where he is at really. Maybe we could bump him off for a second/third rounder from one of the Adelaide clubs at the end of the year before it's too late.

I've said this before and I'll say it again.
I think he just needs some BEEF CAKE 300. :)
Lol

To me he typifies a lot of modern football philosophy. A first round draft pick that has really produced bugger all in 3-4 seasons of football (what's he played - 50 odd games now?). I'd love to know when things changed so you were allowed to be crap for years before or if you came good. First year maybe some allowance, but 4th year? No way.

I know Mackie was an early pick in 02 but when you study the 02 draft , very few players have risen from it.I certainly thought the selection was doubtful but I think looking back, its hard to disagree with Welles choice. Maybe Laycock or McIntosh or Minson if we wanted to go tall or one of the Selwoods if we wanted another ute but for a pick from outside the main Welles got it pretty right.

Looking at him , he is probably one of the most talented players we attempt to play forward, certainly more than Charlie or H.What he lacks is not a mystery , he stuggles with the size of the average defender. I have no doubt if we persist with him that he will but a very good player for us, if and when H or Nathan or TH or whoever steps up to play the dominant bigger body forward.

To persist or not to persist, that is the question. If we decide to trade players at years end as I and others have hypothesised then he may well be a player that appeal to a club with the right mix. Say Port Adelaide with Tredrae, White, Lade all to take bigger defenders may suit him.
Unless there was an obvious player who would lift our list I would like to add our draft picks , another pick in the top 25 would be of great advantage in years to come. Think Steve Johnson in 01, pick 24

Any player who can kick 3 or 4 goals in a quarter has the talent to play AFL football. It is the job of both the coaching staff and the player to be able to harness that talent into a consistent player.

Talk of trading him after 4 years of investment in his football development is ludicrous. If he fizzles out and does nothing this season, then obviously he'll be looked at but I'd be highly surprised even then if he was traded or delisted. Blokes like Lonergan, McCarthy and perhaps Koula have much more to be worried about.

I sincerely hope they just have decided up until year X he does only a certain amount of weights, and then very soon they'll let him rip in the gym. He simply won't make it with his current physique (or lack of one). No doubting he's got ability, but he seems to drift in and out of games. Not that he's the only one of course.

As far as delisting, no doubt the guys you listed are more likely. McCarthy might has well to a ceremonial handing of jumper to Hawkins because both things are certainties.

People need to stop expecting that he's going to beef up to a key position size. It's not going to happen, he doesn't have the frame to build on. If he is to make it, he needs to make it as a flanker with a smaller body. It can be done.

Those three are definately in trouble at the end of the year. I wouldn't be surprised if McCarthy just retired because of all of his injuries. Lonergan has been here long enough and probably wont make it in the AFL. Koulouriotis is also in trouble. He hasn't play many games for his age and probably isn't needed / wont fit into the midfield.
I'm concerned at how many forwards may go at the end of the year - McCarthy, Lonergan, Mackie (they wont get rid of Gardiner, they just love him:rolleyes: ). But I red the article in the Addy today about Grima. Hopefully he'll be a superstar.

A recruiting guy from another club said that iff Mackie were to come up for trade every club would look at him as he has great scope to improve quickly
