Andrew McQualter
Details:
Club: Caulfield Grammar/Gippsland
DOB: 9 June 1986 Hgt: 179cm Wgt: 73kg
Position: Onballer
Natural Foot: Right

Honours:
AIS/AFL Academy 2002
Victoria Country 2003, 2004 (Captain)
National Draft Camp 2004

TAC Stats:
2002: 3 games, 1 goal, 29.7 PPG
2003: 4 games, 3 goals, 39.8 PPG
2004: 9 games, 2 goals, 27.4 PPG

Strengths: McQualter is yet another hard working midfielder off the Caulfield Grammar production line. This has meant limited appearances in the TAC Cup, but when he has played he has won a stack of the footy. Andrew is a natural footballer. He knows where to run, and importantly, knows what to do with the footy once he gets it.

He is also a natural leader and always protects his teammates. He has baulked up this year as well. Is good on either side and his defensive game is excellent. Surprised a few at draft camp with top 3 results in agility, the 3km run and the beep test. Averaged over 10 tackles per game in the TAC Cup.

Weaknesses: Can be exposed by his direct opponent at times, and missed all bar 15 minutes of the carnival through injury, which may harm his chances. Doesn't kick many goals.

Footydraft.com comment: Plenty of debate over this kid - some people love him, others aren't so sure. The concern might be he is good at most things but not brilliant at any of them. But he is a smart footballer who knows how to find the footy, and clubs would be foolish to overlook that. An excellent draft camp where he dispelled many of the queries over his pace will have improved his chances.

Has anyone seen him play or know of him personally and how he is going.......?????
Cheers.

has anyone played with or against him?

Have seen him play from Under 15's to now.

Some players might get one smother per season. Mini gets at least one per game. Never gives up. Hard as nails. Regularly double figures per game tackles. Inspirational leader who backs his teammates to the hilt.

Oh, and he can play a bit too!

Played with him up until under 14's, until he went to Caulfield. Dominated everything. Has amazing ability to kick both sides of the body, and is extremely fit. Probably not big enough yet to play senior footy. But when he does break through, could go very well. He does work extremely hard and definately has the ability to become a player of the Luke Ball mould.

I have seen him play & he is a good friend of my mate's eldest son .Saw him around there the other day ,the kid is absolutely thrilled to bits to be at the saints (who wouldn't be @ the moment ?) I'm sure the saints won't be disappointed with him ,he goes well .Just like to say however that the bit about the Caulfield Grammer production line is crap .Thats like comparing Caulfield to Assumption the difference being that what A.C.K achieve through good coaching & discipline ,Caulfield G.S achieve by scouring the countryside to find the best footballers & athletes & giving them scholarships to go to the school as was the case with Andrew. He was already a champion when he got there & is actually a product of Gippsland Grammar school in Sale.Apart from that gripe ,the Saints got a bargain picking him up when they did.

It's true...but Caulfield didn't get Garruba there with a scholarship and he just missed out on being drafted and he's a chance to get rookied. But you can't say Caulfield doesn't look after the draftees well...Andrew Walker chose Caulfield over other schools because he knew he would be able to achieve his goals for Year 12 and still focus on his footy if he went to Caulfield.

I went to Caulfield and they dont offer more than 2-3 sports scholarships per year at any campus. Its only been recently that Judd, Walker etc have made it, prior to that theres only been Rombotis and Kellaway I think.

Seem to do well picking the talented Gippsland boys do Caulfield...

Goddard, McQualter, Ellis (eligible for 2005 draft)

Know of at least one Gippsland Power player who is also eligible for the draft next year who turned down a scholarship few years ago.
Should still be a chance of being drafted -- but who knows what difference such a decision makes.

Definitely not a bad thing though. Sure the school gets good footy players, but the kids get good coaching, good school, and do their chances of playing AFL no harm.

As for McQualter have seen him play a fair bit for Gippsland this year. Real tough player, never goes missing during games - always doing something - tackling, smothering, sheparding - would top nearly all the stats for any team he has played for.

Mark Chaffey is another one and Stuart Maxfield also, both Wheelers Hill campus boys.
