Thursfield is alright, and if the price was low I would consider as it fills a need.

Only problem is-if you're leaving Richmond because of "lack of opportunities" I doubt Geelong is the club you would choose to come to.
I get what you are saying but right now we are talking about a club that has just signed Lonergan to a 3 year deal. That says to me we ain't flush with options down back so there could be a spot for him.

We're one injury away from problems there and we are unlikely to land a really good Key Defender during the draft so trading for one might be the best policy.

Scarlett, Taylor, Lonergan, Gillies....*sound of crickets*. Am I missing anyone else?

If we can get him on the cheap it is probably worth it. Question is, can we get him cheap or would Richmond play hardball with him?

I'd take him for our 2nd round pick. I wouldn't trade for Thursfield because he's two old to sit on the sidelines for two years waiting for Scarlett to retire.

At 24, why would we want Thursfield? The club had a selection headache all year trying to put Lonergan, Taylor and Scarlett into the same side...and barring a massive loss of form from one there's no reason to think that would change. Thursfield would simply be marking time in the VFL barring injuries. His age means he doesn't have time on his side and he'd just be occupying a list spot we could be using on a developing defender to compliment Gillies in 3-4 years when they'll be playing 22+ games a season.

I know the orthodoxy is 'trade for needs and draft for talent' but in this offseason it's the exact opposite for us, IMO. Our 'needs' such as they are can't be fixed with quick solutions (which is what getting in fringe players is); back the draft and the development system we've got in place and have a bit of patience. If we can pick up someone like Drum - who didn't fill any pressing 'needs', just seemed a talented but undeveloped young player who wanted to come home - on the cheap then awesome, but don't chase C-graders who are at best only going to ****** the development of youngsters in the seniors and at worse waste list space and salary cap for nothing. Not sure which one Walker is but I'd be leaning towards the latter.

As discussed no need for a flanker, a speedy midfielder or ruckman is the go. We do need a taller key defender IMO, but I'd rather draft one for the long term instead of getting an average, medium aged one (i.e Thursfield) whos going to spend the prime of there careers on the emergency list.
