National Bank AFL Draft

Sturt midfielder Angus Monfries believes having played against senior footballers with mature bodies will hold him in good stead, when he makes the transition from the SANFL to the AFL.

And although Monfries was not as forthright in claiming his status as a certain selection at the National Bank AFL Draft next month, there is no doubt the prolific ball-winner will be snapped up, possibly as high as a top 10 pick.

But having had six senior SANFL matches under his belt, Monfries is certain it will be a great benefit in his development.

"It's definitely been a great experience for me, just being able to play against the older blokes," Monfries told Sportal.

"It's probably taught you a lot and having to play against the bigger bodies probably prepares you a bit better for what you want to achieve later down the track."

Monfries made his senior debut in the SANFL in 2003 - playing one match - while he added five to his tally this year.

On top of that he was a member of the AIS/AFL academy squad in 2003-04, which included Australian representation against Ireland in April.

He also played for South Australia in the National Bank's AFL under-18 championships in 2004 and was duly rewarded with All-Australian selection after an outstanding carnival.

"It was a good experience (playing in the championships), but it was a bit disappointing because we didn't get over the line in the last game," Monfries said.

"I then went back and played a few senior games with Sturt, which was good and I got a few finals games, so it was a bit disappointing we didn't win against the Eagles. (But) it was an awesome experience, with the finals pressure and the big crowd."

A South Australian cross-country running champion, who also excelled at swimming, water polo, cricket and baseball, Monfries says the possibility of moving interstate - despite being an Adelaide supporter - does not faze him in the slightest.

"To be honest, it doesn't worry me at all. I just want to play AFL footy, so I'd be prepared to go anywhere to achieve that goal of mine, so it doesn't worry me at all," Monfries said.

A nice artical about him
Does anyone know about sam elliot and justin size. I've heard elliot has hUGE talent but he might turn into a angwin

The poor kid looks terrified. Has Craigy been smiling at him?

What do you guys think the edge is that Monfries has over Eckermann as far as the Crows drafting him? I know he's played SANFL, and is probably helped by being further in physical development, but is there anything else?

Also, my signature is a superb wind-up on the main board. ;)

Probably monfries is taller and has cleaner skills. Although eckerman is pacier i just like monfries better.

Nothing, I'd prefer Eckermann. He's underage and my mate plays with both and rates Eckermann as the better player, and best junior at Sturt for that matter. Monfries is preferred by many people because of the publicity but I think when Eckermann is as old as Monfries (next year) he'll be at the same stage and I think he'll end up better.

I dunno about the ball skills, but the draft camp profile only has Monfries down as 3cm taller, but Eckermann 4kg heavier. Not much in it.

I thought there might be a bit more to it because pretty much everyone seems to think Monfries will go earlier.

It probably comes down to the risk factor

I have not seen Eckermann play so i can't comment on him but I have been very impressed with Monfries in a few games I have seen him play this year. His finals series especially has impressed me. His work in pack situations reminds me a bit of Josh Francou and he has the cleanest pair of hands I have seen in a junior for a long long time.

snakebite, I don't think its the media beat up. I have spoken to a few scouts around the place and some of them rate Monfries really really highly. A couple of them even said that they think he will be a better player than Griffen.

I'm happy with Monfries, he looks the part. I think we'll get him at #8 as well
I would be very happy with him as well but I am a bit concerned that he might get poached before we get a chance. Maybe Hawks @ pick 7 :(

With Thompson and Monfries we potentially have a couple of gun inside midfielders. Clearence galore :D

I like what a read in todays advertiser, seems like a bloke who will give it his all.

If we get him, get him straight into the gym and out on the track and as soon as the season starts get him in the side as a tagger, I dont care if he gets beaten, the experience will do him a hell of alot of good.

even if you subscribe to the whole 35 premiership thing....to be perfectly correct it should read

35 SAFA/SANFL/AFL Premierships

don't forget the SAFL between SAFA and SANFL.........

That's if you want it perfectly correct...........:D

But it meets Porthos's objective how it is now......

Theres only 1 premiership, the AFL premiership.

It doesnt matter how long it took, or which path was taken to get there.

Man U and Arsenal probably have 20 second division premierships but would only be embarrased that they werent playing at the elite level. Certainly wouldnt be mentioning them anyway.

Some are easily pleased though.

Cornes clone can ease Crows' pain
By ANDREW CAPEL
27oct04

ADELAIDE has lived to regret letting Kane Cornes slip through its fingers at the 2000 AFL national draft.

Four years later it gets the chance to pick up a Cornes clone.
In taking the troubled Laurence Angwin with the No. 7 selection instead of Cornes, the other player they coveted at the 2000 draft, the Crows recruited a player who would last just two seasons at West Lakes because of off-field problems.

And they lost one who would play in an AFL premiership side at age 21 and go within a whisker of winning this year's Norm Smith Medal, starring in Port Adelaide's stunning grand final triumph against Brisbane.

Now Adelaide has the opportunity of going someway to making up for its error of judgment. If it likes what Cornes brings to the table, it will find much of the same in Sturt midfielder Angus Monfries.

The pair are made from the same mould. They aren't exactly lookalikes and they aren't the most naturally gifted players but they share the same insatiable work ethic and inner drive to succeed. Like Cornes, Monfries says he was born to play football.

"It's all I've ever wanted to do with my life," the All-Australian under-18 player said. "And I'll do anything it takes to make a success of it."

Outgoing Sturt general manager Graeme Dunstan, who will join the Crows next month as football manager, said the similarities between the pair were striking.

"Like Kane, Angus is an outstanding young man who will do almost anything to reach the highest level," Dunstan said.

"He's one of the best trainers to come through the club (Sturt) and one of the most coachable. There are probably more naturally talented players around but he's got an outstanding work ethic and makes himself better through sheer hard work.

"And he's got things you just can't teach, like his ability to read the play and perform in pressure situations. If you needed someone to kick a pressure goal, he'd be the one. And if you needed someone to put their body on the line to win a game, he'd be the kid to do it."

A prolific ballwinner, deceptively quick and possessing silky skills, Monfries, 17, last year became the Double Blues' youngest league footballer.

He made his league debut against Glenelg at Unley Oval in round 10 at 16 years, four months and 12 days.

This year he starred for South Australia at the under-18 championships in Melbourne, making the All-Australian side, and performed well in Sturt's three-game finals campaign.

Now he covets a taste of the big-time. "I've always been one to set goals and it's been my dream to get drafted," the Year 12 Pembroke College student said.

At 181cm and 72kg, Monfries knows he has to build up physically and has started working out in the gym.

As for his renowned work ethic, he makes no apologies. He is one of the first at training and one of the last to leave and it's no surprise he admires the way Cornes goes about his football.

"I'm not saying I'm going to be as good as him but I guess I am similar in the way I approach my footy," Monfries said.

"He does everything it takes to get the best out of himself and I like to think I do the same. I'm pretty committed and disciplined and try not to leave anything to chance because I want to give myself the best possible chance of succeeding."

A Crows supporter, Monfries has been courted by all 16 AFL clubs and doesn't mind where he ends up "as long as I get drafted".

He is almost certain to be chosen in the first round on November 20, leaving Adelaide with just one crack at him - with its prized No. 8 selection.

"Now Adelaide has the opportunity of going someway to making up for its error of judgment"...Capel talking about Cornes v Angwin.

everything is easy in hindsight. At the time it was probably a fair decision.

Considering your side's midfield was still rated then, but you desperately needed a key forward, it probably was.

The only query now is if Capel is rabbiting on in 4 years time about how "Adelaide now has the opportunity of going someway to making up for its error of judgement in selecting Angus Monfries over Ben Eckermann."

And you base that on what exactly??????

The more I hear about the kid the more impressed I am. It appears he is a clone of K Cornes minus the huge ego.

the Kane Cornes ego was huge, but Monfries is as big! went to school with Kane and umpired Angus, it is a tough choice but id say Anguses is bigger :p
