Hi,

Was happy to find this board. Looks like a great place to learn.

Have always loved the game from a distance, but, never had the chance to follow the game as close as I would have liked due to not being able to get adequate TV coverage.

Now, I can see at least one game live per week, and am getting in the habit of recording the ones that I don't see. Midnight footy on Friday or Saturday night was something I really look forward to every week now.

I come from a ice hockey background, having coached and administered at the Elite levels within Canada. I find the similarities, tactically, between the two sports to be intriguing. Providing support to the man and the ball (puck) is primary in both sports. Good body position is also critical, as well as creating odd-man situations. As well the free flowing physical play and passion of the athletes in both sports is very similar.

If anybody has any hockey related questions, they should feel free to ask.

One question I have. Is there anyplace I can print out a quick and easy scorecard / lineup / game preview / program for upcoming games that will help while I am watching on TV. Something which will have each teams lineup, and some quick statistics? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for having me here. It is a priviledge to be able to enjoy the Aussie game.

G'day, glad to have you on board. For previews etc. you could use www.afl.com.au but be warned, it's slow, poorly designed and a general bastard to operate. The Herald Sun newspaper site is good for news: http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy Here's channel 7's afl site, it's actually fairly decent. http://au.sports.yahoo.com/afl/ That should get you started. As for hockey, what level did you work at? NHL level? junior leagues? After some Canadian mates shown me some playoff games a few years ago I've been hooked. Just a pity they're fans of the evil empire known as the Toronto Maple Leafs........;)

Herbs,

Thank you very much for the info, greatly appreciated.

Right now I am the Director of Scouting with a team in the Canadian Hockey League (U20) which encompasses the top three junior leagues in Canada.

To give a representation of the level, three of our players were recently chosen in the 2007 NHL Draft.

The roster also included 4 players who had been chosen in previous NHL drafts.

I had also previously coached at the Jr. levels and AAA (Tier I) U18 and U16.

It seems that to be a fan of the AFL and NHL would almost be a natural transition.

I will take the high road, and not make a comment about Leafs fans.

Very cool, I'm looking at getting over to Canada within a couple of years, to see friends and sample some hockey in its heartland. Especially some NHL hockey, Oilers fans singing 'O Canada' in Rexall Place during the playoffs, even though I wasn't there, is something to behold.

I like this one. The way the stats are presented in the table format makes it easy to use while watching a game. If it only included gurnsey (trouble getting used to that word) numbers on the table as well, it would be a perfect reference.

1000Islander - where in Canada are you from might I ask?

I only just got back (in June) from living in Edmonton for almost a year, it was the time of my life.

All the guys I lived with converted me to NHL (although it really wasn't that hard) and the Oilers, I managed to attend 2 games at Rexal Place. I just missed out on the Oiler playoff run (Arrived late July 2006) but after being shown all the Whyte Av celebrations, Rexal crowd going insane was definately a sight to behold.

Pssst, Briere's playing for Philadelphia now.;)

haha yer i forgot to mention i havent been following NHL as much i only just browsed the back of the paper last season, i really should start to follow hardcore again, i just loose track real easy of stuff.

Yer it takes some time, i have to ask how do you see free agency? Do you think it would work/be good for the AFL here?

Damn i liked Briere alot, i remember we traded Chris Gratton for him from the Coyotes a few years back. I was a huge Miroslav Satan fan too and Peca.

Right now I am living in Northern Ontario, though I spent most of my life in the Ottawa area.

That Edmonton run was something else. I have never been to Edmonton, but, my 11 year old daughter lists the West Edmonton Mall as her desired vacation destination. I think I will trump her on that one.

Told my wife on the weekend that I want to go to Australia!

If you can avoid free agency, you likely want to stay away. It can really have a polarizing effect on a league. As well, the AFL has a great thing in the territorial loyalty, and with constant movement of players that could be lost.

That being said. As revenues increase, it is hard to avoid free agency, due to the fact that the rights of the individuals can only be withheld so much.

Welcome to our great game hope you can learn a bit and enjoy it more. Do you have a team that you enjoy watching yet? Ive always said that if there were no AFL Ice Hockey would be my game, a brutal contact sport, man on man, fast, skillfull and rules to incorporate players letting off steam every now and then. AFL had a tendancy to be violent in the pre 1980's but since then the league has sanitised the game dramatically to the point there is a lot less passion. But in that time the sport has become full time professional and the quality and pace of the game makes it breath taking at times. I have seen an NHL game when i was a youngster visiting relatives in Philly so the Flyers are my team and although i dont get to see any of their games we always get the results in the paper. Welcome to big footy

psst, Port Adelaide are the newest team in the AFL (but been around since 1877), the 2004 Premiers and need all the new supporters we can get. Cheers

If you replace AFL with NHL, and consider the fact that the NHL has long been professional, this statement mirrors the NHL.

"AFL had a tendancy to be violent in the pre 1980's but since then the league has sanitised the game dramatically to the point there is a lot less passion. But in that time the sport has become full time professional and the quality and pace of the game makes it breath taking at times."

You are right. The ability to win one on one battles is so important in both sports. Another similarity is the constant attempt to try to create time and space for yourself and teammates, and to take away time and space from the opposition.

I will give Port Adelaide supporters credit for believing in their team. They are a fun team to watch. Both Cornes are great players. Rodan is exciting, but, I can see where he would give supporters heart attacks at times. High risk, high reward.

My favorite though is Westoff. A late draft pick, he is a scouts dream. Looking at his frame, he is only going to get better, and he is not yet reached full physical maturity. He can still pack some muscle on.

Rodan is the smallest player in the league and has a rugby background which makes him very hard to tackle, hes recruit of the year picked up with the last pick of the pre season draft. cant see why richmond let him go. We love westhoff cant believe what a recruit he has been, hand picked by mark williams when his recruiting manager told him to go for someone else. local kid from a very successful state league side. we think he looks like napolean dynamite.
