I don't know what happened to the Eagles' skills and spirit but we could see very little of it in the first 5 rounds.
We have now become one of the least skilled teams in the comp, and we are not hard at the ball any more.
I don't mind some turnovers by people like Spangher or Masten, but too many turnovers today and in the last 5 weeks have been by our senior players.
Many of these things have already been discussed on this board, so instead of repeating the arguments I want to propose some measures to go forward. Both short term (that is, for this season) and long term (2009 and beyond).
1. Let's keep turning over the list until we find players who will be here long term. For example we already know that Mckinley is a gun.
2. Let us not persist with mediocre players who we already know what they can give. For example, Chad Jones. He was already delisted by North Melbourne, and hasn't shown much at all in the games he played last year or today. Today he dropped some easy chest marks. We may still have to play some of these players because of injury, but let us be realistic and not persist with them when we already know they are mediocre players.
3. For long term, lets get in the club a good kicking coach (we were better toady, but we're still the worst team in the comp). I don't know who the kicking coach is now, but if we have know he should be sacked.
4. Get an assistant coach to the club who can coach a forward line to function more effectively. Also a a coach who has tactical nous and can both initiate moves to confound the opposition and react to smart moves from the opposition. Again and again, even in our grand final years, we have been out-coached by the opposition.
I have to go now, but I am very dissapointed with the eagles performance this season, and may come back later to add something more to this.
