I traveled on the Tullamarine freeway around Essendon airport a few weeks ago a couple of times. I always saw an Ansett jet parked just outside the hanger.

Did anyone else see it? Considering Ansett collapsed a full 2 years ago now, I cant imagine what it was doing there. I thought other companies either bought their planes (and would have changed the tail logo by now, surely) or they were flown to the Airplane Graveyard in the US.

Does anyone know the story?

Certainly do.

The aircraft you saw was ZK-NZH. It is in Ansett NZ colours. There are also two other BAe-146's there - -NZI & -NZN. They are all still owned by the Ansett administrators, but they were operated in NZ (until Ansett NZ and then Qantas NZ folded).

18 months ago they were damaged in a major windstorm, and they are unflyable at the moment, otherwise they would have been ferried to Tulla. There is no guarantee any of them will fly again due to the extent of the damage.

Post Sept-11, it is very difficult to sell ANY aircraft, let alone "second hand" ones, with not the best reputation. Expect to see them sit there for quite a while yet.

If you want any more info., PM me.

Haha, nah im not doing an assignment on it or anything, i just thought of it as od.

Kinda on topic: anyone else been past that plane graveyard in the Mojave Desert? Freaky sight even 10 years ago, would've been even more so after Sept 11 '01.

thats pretty intersting

I noticed when I had a stopover in Melbourne last July there was an Ansett plane still at Tulla. They should maybe set up a museum there or turn it into a cafe?

It has been there for awhile now not sure why it is there unless Air Express are leasing it ATM as they use those aircraft themselve's it is a BAE 146. I know late last year there were still 3-4 Ansett 737's and 767's at Tullamarine dont know if they have gone.

Yeah there were alot of problems with the BAe-146's especially with fumes in the cabin, I think they also werent that reliable, I travelled on one between Hobart and Melbourne in 1995 it wasnt to bad:D
