You're kidding me right? Ball was clearly better than Hodge before his groin injury. Ball is the hardest nut of the 3 and when he is back on the field in 2008 with two legs....you'll see what I mean. If you're looking for the definition of courage just check out LB's efforts against the Crows this year......then tell me when Chris Judd was able to do that with his groin.....

sorry mate never knew he was injured but iv always seen him goin in hard,

No regrets.

All three players are champions (Ball, Hodge and Judd) and each has qualities that outshine the others'.

At the time of the draft selection, Ball was widely considered the safest "bet". Hodge was well respected and Judd was very much a risk with his shoulders.
The first season it was obvious that Judd was the best of the three. Then next season Ball began to play (after finishing his HSC) and many considered him a standout second best to Judd, and Hodge was heavily criticised. The next year Hodge came of age and showed the AFL just how good a footballer he really was - shutting his critics up with a vengeance. By the end of that year Ball, who had chronic OP, began to be seriously compromised. He has not been free of discomfort in all his career. In 2006 Ball showed us that he was incapable of kicking it over a jam tin, yet he still persisted playing whilst trying to recuperate. This year was no different where he really only dominated in one match - but boy it was beautiful to watch. Judd started getting a similar problem to Ball's and he was basically incapacitated - just shows how courageous Ball is. Both have had the same surgery at the end of season by the same surgeon. Let's hope this frees up both players to perform at their best.

We all want to see the very real stars of our game playing their best, most entertaining football. The jury is still out on these three simply because their careers are not over yet. Who knows what wonders on the footy field they will show us before the decision on who was the better is made.

No regrets from me. Luke Ball is exactly what our engine room needed at the time. There is no point looking backwards in disappointment, always look forward in hope.

No regrets. Apart from anything, irrepective of how well he plays (given his injury constraints), I would very much like to have Ball as a Saints coach in ten years or so.

I have regrets.

I regret that the saints kept playing him when he was so restricted.

I regret that Ball has not had surgery before to correct the problem - why only this year is he having the procedure?

I do regret that Juddy was discounted at the time because of a dislocated shoulder. He is crap overhead even now, but it doesn't seem to matter for him.

Having said this, no-one should complain with having any of these three guns in their team.

I agree fully with the statement in bold. GT the best coach ever has cost him so much... Hopefully he can get over it and have a good pre-season so we can see what he really can do next year.

I do think he has had adductor surgery before tho???

And I definitely do not regret taking him over Judd, the guy is a champion and a great clubman. I just hope he can get fit and shut up these questions!

Ball harder than Hodge.... interesting

Not calling Hodge soft mate....but Ball is always under the bottom of a pack getting the tough ball. Hodge does this as well and has really picked up in this area but this is where Bally excels and that's why we drafted him as we wanted a really good inside player.

i dont see what the issue is.

at the time ball was the right decision for us.

the WCE had suggested they were not interested in Judd so we were hoping to pick him up at pick 5 I think it was.

he went 3 and thats the story.

brownlow, premiership and norm smith, gratz to judd.

bartel has a brownlow and a premiership.

kerr would seriously go pick 2 if the draft for 2000 was taken NOW.

20/20 hindsight.

Ball is one the most couragious saint since trevor barker IMO.

he even declared himself fit to play when it was discovered he had internal bleeding from whelan hit earlier in the season.

IMO balls' courage is up there with dipper going on with a punctured lung and doc baldock playing a GF on one leg.

and given his academic achievements he's no dullard like a few other AFL footballers you can point your finger at.

This is a silly thread because...........

High draft picks does not mean they will produce star players. The recruiters made the decision at the time who they thought was the best. Many top 10 draft picks over the years have not produced any success. Clubs can look back and be dissapointed, but you are better off looking forward with the list you currently have.

luke livingstone LOL

At least we have improved who was that we took way back at 1, Strooper

sure every club has poor picks for a variety of reasons, injury, not improving on junior development, genetics, psychological issues.

when Kosi came to st kilda he was going to be our key CHB at 193cm or something, next season after a late growth spurt turns up as a 197/198 cm!

goddard was 188 or 187 cm on arrive, by the end of the year he was 191.

we got the much abused gumby when he was a star junior ruckman, at 193 or 194 cm, comes to st kilda and refuses to put on height and hours in the gym doesn't put on bulk.

then there was caydn beetham, talent to burn, but arrogant prat

damen shaw was a star but copped a few head injuries and he was saying he couldn't remember parts of the game, was finished at what 22? 23?

you win some and you lose some

i think in one of the preseason games a young caydn beetham put on a display but sadly it was rarely repeated.

It's not silly to debate choices. Yes, when you start looking at who was pick 8 when you had pick 7 it is going too far. Yes, all clubs (WC, StK, Haw) should be happy with their respective picks in 2001. But the club has now recognised that it has under-spent in the recruiting area, and clubs have to be accountable for who they pick. We as supporters don't get to vote on the recruits, so the buck stops with the club.

Are you sure you really barrack for Carlton? Haven't you got some inane putdown you want to make? If you refuse to come on here and make stupid remarks, I will ask that the moderators remove your "Carlton" tag.

has not had surgery before. He said in the papers that he didn't want to do surgery before this.

He has been injured for 2 years now. The guy was an absolute gun before his groin problems and has too much courage for his own good. I cant count the amount of times ive seen the guy with a bandaged up head. Its such a shame though when you see injuries affect players so badly. The sight of Ball hanballing when he has a set shot less than 40 metres out coz he cant make the distance is quite said to watch but i hope he gets fit again. Any true football supporter wants to see gun players at there best regardless of which team they play for..
