i've been thinking, with johnson in and playing well, other players stepping up aswell from yesterdays game, the likeliness of nathan brown to come in and possibly didak, and who knows maybe the dale thomas and shaw 'injury' is a load of crap just to rest them, we don't know. given these circumstances and the form essendon is in at the moment what can we expect? the weather is tipped to be Cloudy. Scattered showers.what are your thoughts?

Re: Anazac Clash: what can we expect?

Im expecting a tight tussle for three quarters before we break away in the last.
We have just need to be careful of their pace, particularly in their forward fifty.
I expect them to try and employ the same sort of tactics that the Blues used so well against us. (Trying to drag our backline up the ground then boot it over the top of them and turn it into a foot race)

Didak will come in after picking up 29 possessions in the VFL yesterday.
After watching The Sunday Footy Show, Nathan Brown basically admitted that he was held out yesterdays VFL game with a view for the ANZAC Day clash.

Having those two back in will be a huge possitive for us.

With Didak back in we finally have someone who can pin point a pass into our forward fifty to a leading forward.
He will also demand a quality opponent, which in turn would free up Paine(or
who ever replaces him) to play on a lesser defender.
He also brings in some much needed X factor that our forward line has been lacking all year.

Brown should take Crameri if he plays of the half forward flank but that will all depend on who they bring in for Hurley.

And it would be nice to get Shaw back (but Im not holding my breathe) as he provides so much drive from our backline and is also capabe of shutting out one of their smalls.

Re: Anazac Clash: what can we expect?

With all the points you've put in there, I know you're secretly expecting us to blow Essendon out of the water haha and I don't see why we can't considering the injury front has completely changed for both teams.

not a bad pint amongst the others, we could potentially blow them out of the water, not getting cocky at this stage yet. but geez with players coming back in it'll bolster our line up and our season, looking forward to it yet :thumbsu:

Re: Anazac Clash: what can we expect?

I expect a two goal game either way , can't see us blowing them away . Any wins a good win at the moment.

That's literally the last thing I'm expecting. If we win it, it won't be won in the 4th. Our final quarters have been god-freakin-awful thus far.

I was refering more to their game against the Blues this week.
It was a lot more intense than our game against the Power.

I see us having an amazing first quarter then holding on to the lead for 3 quarters much like the Port match. Which is fine by me.

One thing we will see is just about every player on the ground out on their feet in the last quarter.

This game usually starts with the intensity of a final, but dies off quite quickly, and with both sides looking at a short break leading into this game, I expect that initial burst to be even shorter this year.

If we "come to play" early, and stick with them, I can see us over running them late, especially as we look to have a few players whose endurance is supreme, and to me only Watson has that for them.

We need to start well though, and we need to play a genuine second ruckman, whether that be Ceglar or Wood.

As people have mentioned, the intensity of the game will be red hot, but with the 4-day break, players will be spent probably well before the final quarter. Which makes me question whether it would be a good idea to go into the game with so many players not match fit - Johnson, Didak, Brown would struggle to run out a whole game even with a full week's break, let along 4 days. Then we have a crop of youngsters - Seedsman, Paine - who are still finding their feet at AFL level. Essendon have a long injury list too, so they might be in the same boat, but having up to 7 or 8 players in the team without the runs in the legs could possibly hurt us.

Nonetheless, I'm expecting Essendon to be much like Carlton were when we played the blues. I don't expect us to put in a performance like we did against the blues. Therefore, optimistically, I think our skills are better than Essendon's and that should see us over the line - 1 or 2 goals max.

told my mate who's essendon they'd win one of the two out of us or
carlton. tough seeing the dons get up for two massive games. Carlton
would have been high on their hitlist after last years EF. also think with
hurley out gives us the edge.
i'd like to see us go with more experience this week, so Wood, didak and Brown should be in the mix.

Pattern already is teams who have the big win just fall flat the next week, it's such a game based on who has the freshest players, it's a bit like picking a pre-season winner

hopefully wood plays better this time 'round

I think the only way we can win is by blitzing them early and be up by 4-5 goals at 3/4 time, similiar as against Port. If the margin is fairly close at 3/4 time or we're behind, I think the Dons will overrun us.

We have to be at least 15 in front by 3/4 time or Essendons speed will kill us in the last.
We havent run any game out this season and only having a few days before our next game makes that stat stick out even more so.

I am expecting Essendon to start the game better than us and have a lead by about 2-3 goals in the first then once we settle I think we will get over the top of them and win the game by 4 goals.

I think we should all write ANZAC correctly.

When ANZAC Day was a wednesday in 2007, they came out and ran rings around us, but we ground them down and came back for a good win. We were $3 outsiders if I remember correctly. Expecting much the same.

Looking at our record on ANZAC day:
DWWWLLLWLLLWWWLWW

No team has ever won two in a row without winning a third;)

We have also won the past 4 against them by an average of 67 points, and 5 of the last 6 Anzac days.
