It is a bloody good film and Mel's not losing the plot..the man is a genius when it comes to film direction. :thumbsu:
Did this miss out on best film and best director for the oscars because it was released after the submission date or have they snubbed it because of Mel's recent troubles?

Interesting. I was talking to hubby about going to see this. It looks good, I don't think I would enjoy the gore though.

i actually think that mel is one of the worlds best directors if not the best at the moment. The thing that really annoys me is he gets bagged for making violent movies, yet plenty of other movie makers make mindless action movies with plenty of killing, his atleast have a story line and are very enjoyable.

It's a ********ing excellent movie. It's the latest spinning around at work and everyone loves it.

Nicely paced storytelling, great scenery, guts, cool deaths and visually awesome bad guys. :thumbsu:

Mel definitely has a unhealthy obsession with people getting decapitated and blows to the head in general... always great viewing.

Went and saw this last night/tonight and I will echo the thread starter

WOW

Just an unbelievable film and well done to Mel Gibson, Dean Semmler and crew on a marvellous film. The performance Mel got from his cast was magnificent and should have been rewarded with a nomination

The gore was in context to the times and people and wasnt over the top

Two small things , a criticism if any , the use of the F bomb I felt wasnt appropriate and was done more for comic relief because I know there were a few giggles in the audience I was with

The second thing is for those movie buffs, try and spot his homage to Dustin Hoffmans Ratso Rizzo

Overall a brilliant movie and well worth the effort

We watched it on Friday night, and we loved it. Beautifully acted and well paced, I thought.
I have to agree with you on the F word. It did seem gratuitious and took from the realism a tiny bit. I remember him having the Irishman use the F word in Braveheart as well which had the same effect IMO. It was just put in for laughs.
And yes, I noticed the "I'm walking here" part as well. Great film. :thumbsu:

It was snubbed because it was crap, that's why. The best picture nominees are ten times better than this.

Really?

Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen

Those 2 worry me

Little Miss Sunshine was a great movie.

Have a look at the reviews from this site. They pretty much reflect my opinions on LMS and Apocalypto .

The thing about Mel's movie is that it is complete fiction. The main player does not even look Mayan (he's not even from Mexico)!

Really?

Best Picture: Babel, The Departed, Letters From Iwo Jima, Little Miss Sunshine, The Queen

Those 2 worry me

Both are excellent movies, way better than Apocalypto, which is typical blockbuster bash and crash fare. The Queen is a great drama/thriller insight into Britain's royal politics and LMS is a comedy with a heart of gold. Loved both.

Gibson sure has lost the plot.

I really liked Apocalypto. Had a great story line and fast paced action that kept your eyes glued to the screen. Was the first film with sub-titles that I've seen in its entirety.

Wow , so Best Picture movies have to be non-fiction? Tom Hanks wasnt even from Philadelphia either.

That's not what I was saying. The second paragraph was a general criticism.

In any case, the treatment of the Maya is a live issue in Mexico. Their culture has been adopted by Cancun resorts, whilst the few jobs available to the Maya are in maintenance and housekeeping. Gibson's is just the latest attacks on the 'savages' and a further example of his ********ed up world view and attack on the 'other'.

To me this was exactly what Mel was warning about. How civilisations get overtaken by the next one and become ''slaves, maids and sacrifices to a greater good''

The period Mel filmed was an interesting one , with not only internal issues , but those arriving offshore. How we see civilisation is formed from our world view. The Jungle Maya of the film would have lived and hunted in a small 30km radius, and the temples would have been mysteries as much as white sails would have been a mystery to those temple dwellers.

The only message I took from this was that we must be careful we dont lose sight of the simple things and not build greater temples in the search for a world we cant attain

Dead right.

Opening scence = 'Civilizations conquer themselves'(or some shit like that) and the last scene the with the Spanish, with a ####ing priest leading the boat was Gibson's way of saying that the natives deserved to be taken over by Christianity as their savage ways was killing them from with in.

I think the last scene was more about local culture and battles paling in significance to world exploration and conquest.
