I think we're definitely seeing something unprecedented now......

Its the second month in a row that the Wii has sold over 700 000 consoles in a non-holiday period in the US...... March was 722 000 which is the highest non-holiday month ever beating the PS2's price drop to $199

and this is while demand still outstripping supply

The PS3 and XBOX360 hardware numbers are probably misleading due to GTA 4 being released on the 29th of April but they're still surprisingly low.... >,>

Interesting to see May's figures....

guessing it would be from pre-orders/opening day.

it broke the record for any type of entertainment for both opening day and opening week. From memory I think it made over $300 mil on opening day (500+ for the week). The previous best opening day was a Harry Potter book in the low $200 millions, previous best game was one of the Halos in the 100's with the best movie being one of the Pirates of the Caribbeans just under 100. Something like that anyway.

NPD figures are abit weird.....

eg: April's figures go up to 3rd of May so GTA 4 was recorded for 5 days of sales

March was calculated as a 5 week month >,>

still not taking anything away from GTA.....definitely a blockbuster selling game.

Interesting to read that the PS3 now has a larger installer base in PAL regions and in Japan than the xbox 360, despite the considerably higher price tag of the PS3 and 18 month head start the xbox 360 had. The US is the only place where xbox 360 still has a lead, though monthly sales between PS3 and xbox 360 have been very close since late last year.

No doubt PS3 is doing pretty good in Europe........but its japanese figures are pretty embarrassing atm.....akin to how Gamecube was doing in the last generation.

Its just that XBOX360's is so horrifically shamefully laughably low that it makes it look good in comparison. I think some outdated models of the gameboy was beating it at some periods.

Its not all loss for Sony though..... the resurgence of the PSP in japan has shown that a familiar game can shock the market back into interest.

That game is probably Final Fantasy 13

Do you have a source for that? Cheers.

I can almost guarantee that the longer these weak sales for the PS3 in Japan continue, the higher the likelihood we get a FF7 remake for PS3.

Lets all pray these abysmal sales continue. :)

That makes no sense. Unless you're saying that the longer the PS3 sells like trash, the more likely Sony will pay a massive amount of money to get the game made?

That's exactly what I'm saying - an FF7 remake would be an absolute blockbuster in Japan. Sony will ensure it happens if these poor sales in japan keep up.

A remake of ff7 would be a monster in sales.

People who haven't played it or don't realise the esteem that game is held in over in Japan would get a huge shock at sales figures etc.

I'd buy two copies so i could keep one all sealed up and seel it in 10 years time for triple the original price.

But FF7 on the PS3 is a pipedream atm....

Square enix has invested a sheetload of moolah on FF13 and are probably concerned about the low install base in Japan hence the constant movement of the release date.

It would be alittle worrying for Sony Japan that two MASSIVE system sellers were already taken from under their noses in Monster Hunter(capcom wii) and Dragon Quest (DS).

Dragon quest 8 was the best selling game on the PS2 in Japan (yes even bigger than FF)

The developers of Dragon Quest 8 (and Dragon Quest IX (DS), Dark Chronicle (PS2)) have got another RPG, White Knight Chronicles, coming out on PS3 sometime this year - hopefully that will help Japan sales a bit.

White Knight Chronicles looks awesome btw. That was the first game I saw for PS3 that made me want to buy one.

May NPD figures are in >,>

No surprises about GTA4.....but Nintendo has a real monster here with Mario Kart. Excellent defensive strategy by the big N in the following two months. Who would have thought that a freaking mario kart would be comparable with the sales monster of the last generation.

Console saleswise very disappointing for the Gorilla two (no matter what their marketing folk spin around). Slight 20k bump for PS3 .... that they're gloating about this figure shows how desperate and low they've sunk to.

Another big surprise is the low amount of hardware and wiifit stock that Nintendo shipped to America considering the amount of marketing they've focused on the product. According to an analyst, they're shifting 4 times the amount of Wiifit stock to Europe because of the weak dollar and the strong Euro.

However Wii consoles have basically been sold out since release so it doesn't look like the monster is going to be subsiding anytime soon. In Japan Wiifit was selling at a reasonably low amount (like 50k a week) for many many months. It had incredible legs and has since outsold the PS3 itself.

If you actually break down the sales figures on a monthly basis from the time of release the PS3 is beating the 360.

360 has been released now for 37 months, selling 19M consoles @ 480,000 per month.

PS3 has been released now for 17 months, selling 13M consoles @ 520,000 per month. The PS2 is still making remarkably great sales too, an indication of the longevity of PS products.

The Wii is in a lower category IMO, nowhere near the performance and capability of the 2 real consoles. I consider the Wii last gen both in terms of price and ability....perhaps explaining why sales are so high, because there certainly isn't that many endearing features to this "console"

I'm not certain, but would sales slow down after a couple of years, lowering the average? PS3 might even be in front of the 360 at 17 months, but the fact remains that if it continues at this pace, 10 years may not be a long enough cycle.

It's weird how it keeps kicking on. I've played a bit, but I wouldn't buy one hehe.
