With all the talk of Connolly's job on the line, I have started wondering about the fate of the rest of the coaching panel. I am curious about how much of the blame for our poor performance should, or will, be attributed to O'Donnell (forward coach), Broadbridge (midfield/opposition coach), Harvey (defence coach), and Malaxos (development coach) if, in the final washup, we again fail to make the finals. I understand of course that the buck stops with the head coach, and rightly so. However, rather than discuss Connolly's future again ad nauseam, I would like to know everyones thoughts on the assistant coaches, and if any of these guys are failing or succeeding in thier designated roles at the club.

"Set-up" to me indicates the allocation of roles, rather than the performance of each individual within them. A critique of the set-up would be a critique of the people/persons who put these guys in their positions. I was actually after a critique of the performance of the assistant coaches this year.

Nice diversion of the question. Whats your opinion of each assistant coach?

I don't have a particularly strong view on any of them.

average performers. I just wonder how much harvey is keeping up his sleeve?

If Harvey is holding back then I don't want him considered for the senior job. He has the perfect opportunity to audition for the role. Imagine an interview for the job where he says "Yeah, I was only half trying as an assistant coach." or something like that.

Not a diversion, just a clarification.I don't have any strong opinions on them either, so I will just look at the performance of their respective divisions, and judge them on this alone.

I think Broadbridge needs to get more out the midfield quite frankly. It is well known that improving clearances was a major focus of the club during the preseason. Broadbridge was handed the task and realistically we haven't seen any improvement in this area. I would say that he could come under fire if the clearance problem doesn't improve.

Harvey has done reasonably well with the defence given that he has had to deal with a few injuries to key personnel. We seem to be doing ok when it comes to keeping the opposition from scoring, but on the other hand I don't think we have generated as much damaging run from the back half as we have in previous years. In terms of the harder edge that Harvey would supposedly bring, we have been tackling ferociously at times and meekly at others. I don't think we are consistently harder team this year as opposed to other years.

O'Donnell's area has perhaps been the one area that seems to have gone backwards since last year. Our forward line has the talent, and started to look really dangerous (Pav in particular) in the second half of last year. This year we haven't looked as potent, and the forwards don't seem to be blocking or creating space for each other as well as the better teams. Not sure if all of the problems in this area can be directed at O'Donnell, as I think that our midfield use and the heavy flooding tactics employed against us this year have also contributed to the poor performance of our forwards, but he does have a lot of work to do.

Can't really comment on Malaxos as i'm not sure exactly what his role entails.

The problem with the assistant coaches is that one year they are coaching defenders the next they are coaching forwards. Kelly O'Donnell has coached forwards, midfield and backs, Broadbridge has coached forwards and midfield. Malaxos coached forwards and midfield not sure what he does now (Player Development) I think Eastaugh is still doing some ruck coaching , Spalding coaches ??? Woewodin coaches ??? sounds like a job for the boys

A lot of Moss st boys in there!!

RH malaxos, O'donnell & Broadbridge have all taken their turns at coaching the midfield with no sucess.

Woey is assisting the assistant broadbrige with the midfield

Spalding is assisting the assistant o'donnell with the forwards.

Eastaugh is still part time(now) ruck coach with Big Bird getting his hand on the ball first most times but it doesn't translate toeffective clearances.

Interesting. I looked at the Pro-stats site before the Geelong game and we wre No. 1 in the league for clearances. We went backwards in big way aainst Geelong. Only Josh Carr, MacManus and Headland have been reliable midfielders for us.

Hasn't had a lot to work with. Hadrill, Hayden, Thornton, Murphy, Schammer -- injured or out of form. Johnson can be brilliant but has also been towelled up more than a couple of times. Only leaves Parker, Mundy and Grover as his reliable defenders.

Has a lot to do with the midfielders and the quality of the delivery. But generally the forward line has been down. Very static. Not taking the marks. We don't seem to cause problems for defences.

Working wtih younger players to get them up to speed for the AFL.

.

I would add Dodd to that list Dr Ralph.

Dagg, I've got to call you on this:

I'm not so sure about that - when I've been checking the clearances we have been close to the worst all season. My read on the Pro-Stats is that we won the clearances 31 to 27 against Geebung. To me, it remains a major problem that has been unresolved for several years, and is a further indictment of the coaching and drafting.

Regardless of individual games stats, overall there has been a big improvement in our clearance rates which is what Broadbridges brief was.

People are dreaming if they think that we are suddenly going to go from one of the worst clearance teams to suddenly winning every clearance but we are going in the right direction.
