Australia Post have applied to the ACCC to increase the price of postage to 50c.

What? How dare they! They have only kept the same price for 10 years and they want to increase it now!

Australia Post, you are the weakest link.

:p

Ten years?? Consider yourselves lucky...

Back in the States, the U.S. Postal Service seems to ask for postage price increases once every three to five years, or something like that.

50c seems fair, though... as long as that's the price to send a standard-weighted letter.

Cheers,
William

It is, really, when you compare it with the cost of US stamps ($0.38 US, as I last recall) while bearing in mind the exchange rate... Australian postage is still cheaper.

Cheers,
William

I don't send letters any more, so it doesn't affect me too much. I only use the mail for work shen I'm sending cheques:p

"The cheque's in the mail" - one of the Great Lies of the Western World.:D :D

I don't think its that bad.....5 cents is a mere price to pay for something that has no risen in 10 years and was not affected by the John Howard Tax.......

Telstra are the ones who need a kick in the head, they are greedy unsensitive thieves.......

I guess sarcasm is lost on this forum. I thought smileys made up for the lack of nuances you'd find in speech that diferentiates meaning. Guess not.

A few valid points have been raised here. How much has Telstra increased their charges since 1992? How about your bank fees? 10 years is a pretty good effort to hold prices at a constant level.

Not many companies can claim that.

Did you know that stamps are subject to GST? Australia Post has absorbed this cost itself since the introduction of the tax.

Can't speak for the others, but the sarcasm was noted, and duplicated in my post. :p

Although an extra 5 cents for stamps is something that has kept me awake worrying many a night. :p

I'm always willing to keep the US Postal service in business. Stamp hikes are a small price to keep that many crazy-assed people from having unemployment disgruntlement.

PS: If you are a US Postal worker....err I'm joking - and armed.

Don't know what the Australian postal culture is like, but if it is anything like America's, well, it is an environment I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy.

I was a USPS worker for four months. The stereotypes are all dead-set, absolutely 100% true. The work environment is dark, dirty, dusty, noisy, labour intensive, even dangerous, and thoroughly demoralizing. Shifts run until 2 or 3 in the morning some nights, sometimes weekends. Six days a week, with mandatory overtime.

There was a guy who had been there for 20 years - he had been fired three times but reinstated each time because the union was so strong that he could get his job back by filing a grievance and won each time. Every day he showed up early, stayed late, sexually harrassed all the women, started rumours about employees, and would turn people against each other. I saw two supervisors nearly get into a fistfight.

This guy is gonna be the one who brings the semi-automatic assault weapon. You could see it in his eyes.
