What is going on?

This is at least the third time this in a Test match this summer that bad light has ended play. (It happened twice in the Sydney test.)

Apparently, the ruling is that if the floodlights become the "primary source" of light then they head off.

I find this is absolutely absurd. What is wrong with playing under a field predominately lit by floodlights? Over the last six or so seasons, we've filled the required overs of the day with the lights on if necessary. Play would only end early if there was rain.

I thought offering the batsmen the light was a thing of the past. Why the change of philosophy?

I vaguely remember the options of the lights being used were given to both captains pre series and for it to happen both captains had to agree

how the hell can they play one dayers then?
When was the last time it didnt rain during a brisbane test.
Perth and Adelaide must be the only bloody cities where you actually get a full days play.

It's crap. They should use the lights to fill in the overs required. But at least they start earlier if need be to make up some of the un bowled overs so that not as much cricket is lost.

A red ball is very different to a white one under lights. It's very hard to see a red ball against a darkened crowd or sky.....

I always thought it was up to both captains to agree on it, if one disagredd then they werent used. IIRC, India said no to lights last tour.

Going off for bad light when the lights are on is a joke. It just doesn't make sense - I was there at the Zimbabwe Test at the SCG when they went off on the Sunday, and it was still very playable.

I was pretty sure that the requirement of the captains agreeing to terms before the start of the series was scrapped a few years ago.

That was pretty farcical too. "Oh we can't play under lights, because we've never played a Test under lights before."

it wasnt as bad as that time we were playing somewhere in NZ, where it was broad daylight, but the umpires stood in the shadow of the stands and the light meter didnt get high enough. absurd. i think it was bucknor again.

was that the indians last time who objected to that? it was either them or the pakistanis 2000/01

The Pakistanis were OK with using the lights that summer, it was India who said no - and so on Boxing Day they went off for bad light while the lights remained switched off. It just didn't make sense.

What did Ganguly do?

It was a combination of the umpires and Australians that resulted in the early cessation.
i'm talking about when both captains did not agree on the use of floodlights to prolong the days play when they were last touring here. Well not really both captains, that's a blight on S Waugh.

Forget the technicialities, why would the Australians have taken the light anyway?

They'd have been well aware there is more rain (lots more rain) forecast today and possibly tomorrow as well. On that basis wouldn't you be looking to squeeze every ounce of play from the day you could.

Ok - if you lose a wicket ask for the light then!

If India escape from Brisbane with a draw they will regard themselves as truly blessed. The one pitch they have to play on they'd have been fully expecting to lose and we give them a break - with rain looming.

Where you're infamous killer instinct Tugga? Or is this team (all of them) becoming to preoccupied with their averages.

leaving Brisbane with a draw the fault of the batters taking the light on day one? the overs are made up throughout the remaining 4 days. The risk is far greater of losing 2 wickets in dodgy light than it is of needing the extra 5 overs that weren't able to be made up during the course of the match.
