Heading to Bali again in October, but despite being there 10+ times never got a few suits made up. Can someone recommend a place that does a good job. How much should I pay, do I need to show them the style I want etc.

Cheers,
Rizz

Alus tailor & boutique.

she is just around the corner from Supernova. Any cab driver will know were it is when you say around the corner from Supernova.

Is pretty much in heart of Kuta and is well worth going in there for a look.

you can go get stuff done for cheaper but obviously it is then cheap quality.

she is a little more expensive but does a much better job!

She is a little more expensive then others but is more then worth the extra cost. It is Bali after all, so is not near as bad as getting a suit made here.

Yeah I realise that, knowing Bali I'm always happy to pay the bit extra and get something better made. Does she have designs and stuff there, or is it better to find some here and bring it over?

How much did you pay for your suit from her?

You can take your own design and she will do it, but she has plenty of her own and heaps of books to look through.

By memory i think about 900,000 but give or take a bit. Like i said you can get cheaper but she does a very good job!!

A lot of the different shops (not all) use the same workers to have the suits made so the quality of workmanship won't vary that much. The pricing will then depend on how hard you bargain & what type of material you choose. A basic suit made with cheap material should only be about 700K (probably less if you don't get lining). If you know your fabrics & choose a better quality wool/cashmere as well as silk lining & good quality buttons then the prices will go up & up. A good quality suit would be upwards of 2mil but unless you know your stuff I wouldn't recommend you try to get an expensive suit on the streets of Kuta (I haven't checked prices for about 2 years so these figures are from memory). They also like to attempt higher prices for bigger blokes (more fabric) but you can get around this. Overall i would say that the fabrics & workmanship in Bali is not as good as say Thailand, Vietnam or China (where I've had suits made) but for occasional wear (weddings etc) they are OK. The other option to consider is to go & look at suits off the shelf in the shopping centres or Matahari's. Matahari's does free adjustments while you wait & its also a good reference point before you hit the street tailors to know what they are charging off the rack. Its also a lot less stressful than bargaining for your suit & having to go back for fittings when you're all hot & sweaty.

As far as designs go they have loads of fashion mags that they can copy as well as some styles on display. It may pay to know what you want before you go so you don't get flustered there & end up with a suit you'll never wear.

Try for a 1/5 of the price you'd pay here, but maybe start at 1/10 and slowly work to a 1/5. It's always good to start questioning yourself if you really want it 1/2 way through the bartering process. Because when bartering never give your opponent the idea that you really must have what they have got.

There's one in Kuta near the AFL Shop (Up in Poppies I) near Secret Garden, if you know where the AFL Shop is.
