A few mates and I are heading to Bali from Feb 7-13. We will be staying on Kuta Beach.

I was wondering if any of you have been there and could recommend a few places that would be worth checking out. (Especially the pub/nightclub scene)

I'm also going to venture to the Sari Club site and look at the meomerial that is there. As an Australian I feel quite obligated to go there and pay my respects. They have also reopened Paddy's bar and I will be sure to go there and have a toast to the people that lost their lifes for just having a good time on a Saturday night.

Thanks.

1/ Its actually not Paddy's Bar as per the original spot. Its actually just another bar owned by the same bloke who renamed one of his other bar's.

2/ Try the wave bar in Kuta, it has a big fake wave there, that you can get your picture taken surfing on.

3/ The area's where the bomb went off, Sari and Paddy's bar, are(as of my last visit, Sept last year) just semi fenced of areas.

4/ Am trying to get my G/F to go there, ive been 3 times for work, but she's not keen at all. But i actually felt very safe over there, the Balinesse are great friendly people. Enjoy your time.

Hey Nick,

Where abouts in Kuta are you staying? I was there in July 2002, and it was a fantastic place for a quick easy holiday.

Most of the nightlife has moved from Kuta in the Legian/Tuban area from what I've heard. There are still drinking spots at Bagus and The Bounty - has a big ship out the front.

Lots of surf shops in Bali, the locals are super friendly - don't be like some gimps I've seen barter down 5,000 Rph when its only .80c in Aussie Dollars. Make sure you go white water rafting one afternoon too.

You'll have a great time I'm sure.

I just got back from Bali last week.

The only thing to know is that you will acclimatise to the surroundings very fast so you really don't need to do much homework.

In saying that though, the Bounty ship is the biggest night out in Kuta and heaps of drunken fun. There are a few other little bars including the new Paddys & the Apache Reggae Bar which you will no dount stumble upon on the main drag of Kuta (Jl Legian). If you need more excitement than that, Seminyak has a few busy clubs and its just two beaches up the coast from Kuta, a pretty quick cab drive.

You only need to know 2 words to get by: "BINTANG" which is the local brew and "BAGUS" which means good. If you like stuff, its always "bagus!"

I recommend you boys drop into The Troppo Zone, they love Aussies there. Ask about their legendary Two Day Tour and secure a spot on it if you can spare the time. It would be the only tour you need to do when in Bali, you get to see heaps of great stuff and they set you up in this awesome 5 star resort for the night which a bunch of like minded tourists and they just ply you with alcohol all night long. Troppo Zone is on a little lane way off Jl legian, behind the former Paddy's site. Just drop in there for a few bintangs anyway and marvel at the disgraced Aussies who have left their mark on the place.

Not sure about the Troppo Zone tours, but I would definately recommend anyone to AVOID the Troppo Zone hotel (end lane at Poppies Gang 2). It is a party hotel aimed at the 18-35 y/o market, but when I went there to have a look, there was hardly anyone there apart from some old looking guys hanging around the pool bar.

If you want a good hotel for the 18-35 market I'd recommend the Bounty Hotel or Barong Hotel (Poppies Gang 2).

Also - make sure you go to Makro Warehouse - on the Jl Bypass Rd to Sanur - you can get 3 packets of TimTams for $1.20AUD, 8 packets of Mentos for .80c AUD

It's served me well the last two trips I've made so I'm surprised it wasn't busier when you were there. There was probably between 80 to 100 maniacs there last week. I went over with my partner and we were constantly amused by all the bed hopping that was going on, JESUS CHRIST!
Pity the bar closes as midnight tho.

I'm looking forward to checking out The Bounty next time on strong recommendations and maybe that new place they've built at Uluwatu. What a beautiful spot.

Nick my only other advice is don't buy anything off the street for the 1st 48 hours so you can get an idea of what others are paying for shirts and sunnies, etc Lovely people, but they can smell how green you are and will rob you blind if you give them half a chance.

A few more things to say-

"Satu lagi bintang besar, terimah kasih" - One more large Bingtang please

"Bagus sekali!" - Very nice!

When somebody says "terimah kasih" to you, say "sama sama" in return.

A large bintang and a nasi goreng with a drippy fried googie egg on top...... mmmmmmmmm.......

Anyone know where you can buy bintang in Melbourne?

Damn straight mate! Also you gotta try their Arak Attacks and Jam Jars.

One more thing... their fruit juices and cans of pop are so cheap - its good to get them and make some cocktails with your dutyfree drinks.
