Bartel expected to be fit for Cats

---

GEELONG coach Mark Thompson expects midfielder Jimmy Bartel to play in Friday night's match against Essendon at the Telstra Dome.
Bartel, who has been in superb form this season, was concussed last weekend against Sydney and had to spend a night in hospital.
Thompson said while Bartel had some headaches earlier in the week he now seems well enough to play, although he will face a fitness test on Friday.
"At the moment he's in (but) it's a day-to-day thing. Today he was really bubbly, bright and alert," Thompson said.
"There was a little bit of doubt yesterday (but) that's gone today. He might come in tomorrow with a few problems.
"We're just going to have to wait probably until Friday to see whether he's really clear and sharp."
Thompson also said the planned return of Essendon's Adam Ramanauskas on Friday was a great story, with the Bomber's premiership player having twice beaten cancer.
He said he wished him well in his return to football and said it would be an emotional match on Friday night, considering both Ramanauskas' return and Essendon champion James Hird playing his 250th match.
"We prefer Hird not to be playing his 250th this week but unfortunately he is and we just have to deal with it," Thompson said.
"Naturally they're going to do everything they possibly can to win for him and we're going to do everything we possibly can not to let that happen."

You missed the funniest part of the article when Bomber was talking about Lloyd being out....

“He’s out and someone else is going to be in. We didn’t come in here this morning doing high fives, because there are still 18 players on the ground at any one time.”

And you claim not to use drugs?

:D Reminds me of watching The Decline of Western Civilization part 2: The Metal Years. All those metal band members who were NOTORIOUS for using drugs professing not to know anything about it.

And yeah Kittenish, I said I was sorry and I'd leave ya alone about the drug use, but I just watched The Metal Years again just this afternoon! Ah it was good just seeing W.A.S.P's Chris Holmes necking vodka like it was water...

THREAD-RELEVANT EDIT: Bartel set to start against Bombers

A courageous episode in Geelong midfielder Jimmy Bartel's history has coach Mark Thompson leaning towards playing him in Friday night's AFL clash with Essendon at Telstra Dome.

Bartel, who has been in superb form for the Cats this season, spent a night in hospital after being concussed during last Saturday's match against Sydney, the concussion causing numbness in his neck and arms.

Thompson said while Bartel was still experiencing headaches on Tuesday, he was bright and alert and completed a searching exercise session on Wednesday to indicate he would be ready to take the field.

And the coach said while Bartel would have to pass a final fitness test on Friday, his strong comeback from a similar incident two years ago gave a good indication of what could be expected.

"He got knocked out in round three, 2005, and spent two days in hospital," Thompson said.

"He came out (next round) and kicked two goals and got 21 possessions and was in the best players.

"You can clear people to play medically and then you've just got to look at their performances the week after if they do happen to play and we've tried to do that."

While Bartel has been pencilled in, the Cats will have to make one change, with Max Rooke sidelined by a hamstring injury.

Thompson said Josh Hunt, Kane Tenace and David Johnson were in line to replace him.

He said they were among seven or eight players in good form in the VFL, but unable to break into the AFL side, given the top-placed Cats' strong run with form and fitness.

"It's a good situation to be in ... that doesn't guarantee that this week we're not going to get injuries," he said.

"That's when these players will get their opportunities and when they do I'm sure that they'll really appreciate the chance they get and I'm sure we'll use them at some stage."

Meanwhile, he said the Cats could expect to be hit by a wave of emotion with the Bombers celebrating James Hird's 250th AFL match, as well as Adam Ramanauskas' comeback from cancer.

"It's a great story, we all hope (Ramanauskas) does well in his comeback, but not this week against Geelong," Thompson said.

Thompson, a former team-mate of Hird, who captained the 1993 premiership side of which Hird was a member, did not hold back in his praise for the Bombers' champion.

"He's probably the best I played with," Thompson said.

"He wasn't at the time I retired, but by now he is, definitely."

He said some observers scoffed when Hird was named by the club as their third-best player in history five years ago, behind only Dick Reynolds and John Coleman, but that had since been validated.
