I have believed for many years, that when players are drafted, a big sucker nozzle is applied to their head and all the footy skills they have learnt over the years is sucked out. After drafting they are then indoctrinated with "beautiful" footy tactics that look quite cute on the whiteboard, but the whiteboard doesn't tell them what to do in a "dangerous" situation.
Basic junior footy skills taught are :-
If you can't mark, destroy.
Know where your opponent is.
In the backline, if in doubt, kick long to the boundary.
At a ruck contest, have a man at both sides of the contest.
If in doubt the full back kicks long to the defensive flank.
Have forwards lead in two directions, to offer options.
Ok there are some points, why do professional footballer struggle to do the above?. Is coaching that hard or do players not follow orders?, choose your option.
Do the basic things and good things will eventuate.
On the bus going home from Saturdays game we thought that we should rotate the coach weekly and the coach each week is the one who brings the oranges.
