Queensland are set to throw traditional fielding techniques out the window when they trial 'basing up' over coming weeks.
While in the field the players will take one step and then freeze, with equal balance on their feet, breaking with the traditional technique of walking in with the bowler.
Queensland officials said fielders walking in with the bowler often get caught mid step, resulting in a loss of quick movement.

Interesting. Is the term 'basing up' a reference to baseball fielding techniques?

not a good thing IMO.

i agree you can sometimes get caught in midstep which means you start accelarating abit later, however when your just standing in the field not doing anything, you tend to "fall asleep" and not concentrate, and its harder to get moving if your flat footed. The whole point of this basing up it is so you can move as soon as possible.

However, when your walking in you may move later if your caught midstep, however, the accelaration period is less because your already accelerating when you walk in.

It will be interesting to see how it goes, but i doubt if it will work.

a few years ago (maybe even during the last world cup?) in an Aus v RSA one-dayer... they showed split-screen replays of jonty rhodes and herschelle gibbs in the field. Each ball, while walking in, they would walk in and then sort of "skip" off the ground - ie: both feet off the ground as the ball is being bowled - that way they could push off on either foot a split second after seeing which direction the ball is hit.
