Wondering a few things...

Checked the athletic league sight for the heat draws and times etc but im not sure if im looking straight past it but it doesnt give a date for when the heats are run. Obviously the final is on the 28th. Im assuming the semi finals are also on the 28th therefore the start times posted for the heats is for the the 27th???

Any insider tips for the race as well???
My mate Dale Woodhams is currently the shortest price at $4. Has a good heat draw and is of 7m. Won in Mt Gambier a few weeks ago off a 7.5 handicap (i think). Smart money with him i think.

Other than that ill see you in the beer tent!

Re: Bay Sheffield 2007

Not sure about the 2008 Bay Sheff but in the 2007 Bay Sheff Bubner was 3rd in the final, Woodhams was run out in semis.

DAMIAN Tohl ran his way into history with a desperate lunge to win the 121st Bay Sheffield Gift final at Glenelg tonight.

Tohl, 22, beat Queenslander Brad Peters by just one one-thousandth of a second to join his father and coach Anthony, who won the Gift in 1981, as the only father and son duo in an elite list of Bay Sheffield Gift winners.

Tohl crossed the line in 12.28 seconds – just 0.05 seconds behind his semi-final time despite a strengthening head-wind.

The win fulfilled a life-long dream for Tohl, who said he had always wanted to emulate his father's victory at Colley Reserve.

"It's just amazing," he said. "I thought I might have got there but I didn't know for sure.

"I can remember one year a long time ago when I was little walking out on to the track after the race and thinking I just really wanted to win the Bay Sheffield," he said. "I wasn't running for the prize money – it's all about history."

Anthony Tohl said he was extremely proud of his son's win. "This is South Australian history and Damian's part of it . . . I guess we're both part of it," he said.

"He was pretty calm going into it. He was either going to win it or he wasn't."

He maintained his focus after a false start in his heat when he broke before the starter's gun and had to move his blocks back one metre.

He still managed to win comfortably ahead of Victoria's Sam Jamieson and went on to win his semi-final ahead of ACT runner John Jakeman.

Tohl said he had a moment of doubt in the final but had forced himself to make one last effort.

"About 10 or 20 metres out my legs were wobbling and I thought `I don't know if I'll be able to do this'," he said. "Then I thought `I've come too far to let it go now' so I just gave it everything I had and managed to get there."

Third place went to 19-year-old Alex Bubner – son of former Central Districts and Sturt footballer Peter Bubner.

The final started dramatically when local chance Duncan Tippins broke and was forced back to a handicap of 5.75m.

Tippins was unable to overcome the penalty and finished sixth.

Tohl's win was one of many firsts in a historic day of racing.

Flinders runners Dale Engler, 25, and Toby Medlin, 23, became the first runners to record a dead heat in the 1600m selected backmarkers event.
Engler ran a great race off scratch to hit the line alongside Medlin.

Race stewards offered the pair a re-run but they were happy to split the prize.

"I think we timed our dips to perfection," Medlin said.

The women's gift also provided a unique result.

Lynette Mattingly returned to the winners dais after nine years to become the first woman to win the race twice.

In addition to being the only two-time winner, Mattingly is also one half of the only pair of siblings to have won a gift at the carnival. Her sister Amanda Watts won the women's final in 2004.

SA Athletics League President Brendan Golden said this year's carnival had been a huge success.

"The weather was just brilliant and the men's final was so close it was almost a re-run," he said.

"It was the closest final for at least three years.

"To have just one metre between first and sixth in the final was amazing.

"The crowd really packed in just before the two gift finals and it was deathly quiet just before the starts. It was a great atmosphere."
