One would have to ask why we would extend his contract given he hasn't exactly had a successful first season in charge.
I'd argue no one coming to our club could ever have a successful first season, or second.

... or third.

Below is the official club write up on Peter Bell:

General Manager Football Operations - Peter Bell
Peter is a former Fremantle captain and dual premiership player with North Melbourne, past president of AFL Players’ Association, inaugural chairman of the AFL Players’ Trust and Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee. Peter started his 286-game AFL career for Fremantle in 1995 and completed his secondary education at Aquinas College and has a Bachelor of Laws from Melbourne University. He has carved out a highly successful career as a businessman, radio broadcaster and sports commentator in the decade since he played his last game for Fremantle in 2008.

Is there anything you like about Fremantle?
Genuine question, not trolling.

You think if Peter Bell wasn't a club legend people would be happy with someone of his background getting the job? Genuine question, not trolling.

In terms of Fremantle, I actually think we have a pretty good list that can take us pretty far. I love Cerra and think he is a cut above any other young player we have on the list, just hate the way he is being used this season. Darcy seems like he will be a top 10 AFL ruck which is pretty damn good to have. Brayshaw seems like a born leader and has shown his incredible mental and physical toughness.

Not a lot of love on the admin side of things though, we seem to be leaking info at an alarming rate and nobody seems to be presenting a clear and concise plan to the public/members which is where a lot of the angst is coming from. It's incredibly frustrating to read the blind faith some of the people on here post given we have shown nothing in the past to suggest we are worthy of said faith. Peter Bell, I hope he does well and I really like the guy (which Fremantle fan doesn't) but so far nothing we have been shown screams contract extension. Lets not forget his bungling of the Hogan trade where he publicly stated we had pulled out of the deal after doing due diligence, or his lack of feathers.

Really? You can't be this naive. What goes on off the field we have no idea but the fact that he has been extended means there is some heavy lifting being done with a plan.

Can only go on what has been presented. Take away his games played for Fremantle and he doesn't hold even a quarter of the faith you are giving him.

Not sure I feel great about so much importance being put on a guy who's in his first year ever of the job (with no relevant previous experience). From the outside I'm not a fan of Rosich so I naturally take Bell's side but that's entirely based on faith. It'd have been hard coming in like he did but you certainly can't say his first season has been a success from the outside.

Anyway at least he's a big personality that can challenge Ross/Rosich. Hopefully he knows what he's doing.

I'm not sure he's the big personality people think he is.

I'm on the fence with Bell. I hope he's committed to change like it seemed when he first arrived. The reality is not much has changed so far.
He needs to follow through and put a broom through the place like most of the posters above are expecting. If so great.

If not, another 3 years is a long time for someone who may not be suited for the job.

An administrator can't be chopping and changing into the season. There was suitable stability when he arrived and they first addressed issues in recruiting although we are hamstrung for mids at the moment. I fully expect there to be major changes in the next 6 weeks.

Fair enough, he's had a good year now to get to know the different departments and staff and where the weak links are. I am expecting changes too.

Bloody hell 9 months ago he was a genius and saviour of the club with his recruiting coup.
Now he might not be suited for the job.
Bell is the one we need to keep, the rest should be on notice.

Arrives under suitable stability, 9 months later there is clear instability. Lets give him an extension. Makes all the sense in the world. Great player though.

As a died in the wool conspiracy theorist I’m thinking that the Bell extension has been done in an effort to buy him off, easing the pressure on Lyon and Rosich.

The clear instability is what exactly? As far as I can tell it's on-field results that have been disappointing along with our injuries. A lot of people seem to buying into the WA media punt job on the club as a whole.

Were we really that stable end of last season though? Bond and Lloyd were out the door and bloody Rosich was filling in as list manager. Instability is short term pain for long term gain anyway, why be comfortable being stable if that has only brought mediocrity. People should be on their toes at the moment.
