Were we really that stable end of last season though? Bond and Lloyd were out the door and bloody Rosich was filling in as list manager. Instability is short term pain for long term gain anyway, why be comfortable being stable if that has only brought mediocrity. People should be on their toes at the moment.

I was just quoting old mate in his stability wording. I will never win this argument as Bell is a club legend which funnily enough is why he got the job in the first place. God damn I hope he is half as good as people on here seem to think he is.

Jury is indeed still out on Bell. Wasn't he in on the Hogan deal?

I thought the latest rumour was that Bell was the one that really did want to walk away after the first round of interviews and medicals, like what was reported at the time, but that he was over ruled and told to get a deal done. Have zero idea about any truth to it.

Anyone dissing Bell and saying he isn't capable are truly clueless.

He isn't the reason Freo are struggling.

I agree with you, Bell isn't the reason Fremantle is struggling.

But he is syptomatic of the problem. As in, he has no track record of reviewing football operations and turning them around, yet he is now somehow the messiah who is going to make everything right. Not to say he isn't capable, but there is a good chance that he could make matters worse.

Just to be clear, there is a lack of leadership and direction at the club, which has been a problem since inception. For a start, there seems to be too much weight given to ex-players on the Freo board. There were 3 prior to Bell standing down to take on the GM role. The Eagles are going from strength to strength, and currently have no ex-players on the board, and haven't for a few years. Collingwood have one ex-player.

And how do you know he is incapable? You don't

he was opposed to Jesse Hogan coming over. that's when the first media release came out. Peter Bell knew of his reputation, wretched foot, and wrote it off. Rosich and Ross Lyon wanted him in because it looks great for membership (boogly eyes) and is short term gain and could buy you a new contract (Lyon).

Peter Bell is a smart, well liked person who was respected as a footballer and person by the players, staff, and supporters. the fact he came back to our shitful club after playing in one of the great eras paints him as a bloke with some determination and grit. people writing him off? seriously? because a media release written by a post-grad on 39k a year wrote that he went to a private school? my lord.

Which is why I said "Not to say he isn't capable".

He may have the ability, but it isn't proven. Pretty much sums up out approach to list management, and most of everything else at the club. Do you see the problem, yet? Maybe we should change the club song to Abba "Take A Chance on Me".

Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best, baby can't you see
Gotta put me to the test, take a chance on me
(take a chance, take a chance, take a chance on me)

On a more serious note, are we headed in the same direction?

Scott Watters reveals extent of St Kilda list disaster

Scott Watters inherited a list management disaster with St Kilda $220,000 over the salary cap and effectively in “receivership” only days after he took over from Ross Lyon in late 2011.
In the Herald Sun’s Sacked podcast series, he reveals the list management fiasco he and football boss Chris Pelchen attempted to fix after Lyon moved to Fremantle.
Then-Pies assistant Watters took on the role despite being warned by Collingwood list manager Derek Hine that the Saints had secured the least top-10 picks in a decade and retained the fewest of them.
They were told by the AFL they were legally unable to spend an extra cent on retaining players, after a set of bizarre contracts that included one-off $50,000 All-Australian bonuses added to the ongoing base of contracts in subsequent years.
St Kilda eventually moved on Brendon Goddard, Nick Dal Santo and Ben McEvoy in a list “fire sale”.
Watters said both he and McEvoy were in tears when he told the ruckman he was being traded.
Despite being warned by Hine as he left the Pies, he was still shocked by the mess left by previous administrations.
“I spoke to Derek Hine saying I am thinking of putting my hand up and said, ‘What are you thinking about the list?’, and the term he used I couldn’t use here on the podcast.
“Something I didn’t know walking into that role is that three days after walking in we were $220,000 over the salary cap.
“I was driving to a meeting with Chris Pelchen and we were trying to re-sign (full-back) Zac Dawson.
“At the time he was the only thing that resembled a key defender on our list. Zac wanted $35,000 more a season and we were basically in receivership. Under jurisdiction from the AFL not one more player on the list could be offered one dollar more.”

Only if our administration is offering contracts with as stupid clauses as the saints.
But I’m guessing Lyons to blame for that as well?

Just add it to the list things are going nuts atm.

Or list management is the main cause...

List management didn't provide an adequate replacement for Pav to train as 2nd tall and ultimately take over, amongst a huge litany of woes. I've backed and defended Tabs since day dot as he has worked hard, but is not in the same conversation as a Pav, Riewoldt, Hogan etc for (hard working) talent.

The fire sale of our 1st round picks, in the noughties was nothing more than trading the cow for magic beans and it left us a decade later without all those first round talents. It was a compromised list in Harveys day and as the talents exited with no experienced and talented replacements necessitated this wretched rebuild.

100%.
The making of this total rebuild of our list was pretty much started by the poor decisions of those in charge at the time 10+years ago.

The Lyon flaming is in another thread. Why raise it here when the discussion is about Bell's extension, and what he potentially brings to the club? I say potential, because he still hasn't delivered anything tangible that I can see.

The point of my Scott Watters post is that St Kilda was in a shambles when Lyon left there. I suspect it was the main reason he jumped ship a year early on his contract and came to Fremantle. Was Lyon to blame? I have no idea.

After years of under achieving and a coach under pressure, Richmond cleared the decks and kept Hardwick, and won a premiership the following year (or was it 2 years later). That's what I thought Bell was brought in to do.

I think the acid for Bell in terms of clearing the decks is right now.

He was only appointed in late September 2018. Assistant Coaches who aren't being kept have to be informed by 1 August. So that deadline had alredy sailed by the time Bell came on board last year.

This year though? Regarding assistant coaches, we should be finding out right about now.

If you are holding a senior management role at the age of 43 your High School shouldn't need to be mentioned in a three sentence write up.

You obviously don't move in the right circles then. Being an old boys from some private school has always been a currency in Perth.
