Bella Smith was recruited by Collingwood in the 2020 AFLW Draft and prior to that played three seasons with Norwood in the SANFL.

Originally from Cleve on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula, Smith has played for the Central Allies, the representative team for South Australia and the Northern Territory at the 2019 AFLW Under 18 Championships.

A rebounding defender, Smith also has the ability to play up forward.

“Bella brings versatility to the side, she can play ruck, forward and back,” AFLW Senior Coach Scott Gowans said.

“The fact that she’s done a few pre-seasons and played a few AFLW games means she brings with her the experience at that top level. She’s also been part of a great program at Collingwood too.

“Bella is a very resilient athlete who has moved to multiple states to pursue her career in AFLW.”

The Sydney Swans have received pick 49 the AFLW Draft in a trade with Fremantle for forward Bella Smith.
Smith played 26 games for the Swans AFLW side since arriving from Collingwood for the 2022 season.
Smith was a valuable member of the forward line booting 11 goals over her three seasons in the red and white, including a haul of five in the last game of 2024 against West Coast.

This isn't as disappointing as losing Heads but still really disappointing. Bella is super-lovely and had a bit of a breakout game against West Coast to finish the season. Plus she is exactly the type of tall player that we are running short of. It's true that apart from that one game Bella hasn't dominated at AFLW level but she's only 23 years old and will continue to improve.

Very best wishes Bella - we'll miss you!
