Just throwing an idea out among the cats fans, and see what everyone else thought...With Judd the prize pig and being all anyone can talk about when it comes to trades at the end of the year has Benny dropped under the radar?

Anyways staying on topic, would/should we try and get him at the end of the year if he is clean and wants to play footy? Second Question, what would/should we give up to get him?

IMO, his everything we need in the midfield hard, fast and a guy who will win you a game off his own boot.

Joel Corey (:() + 2nd round pick for Cousins and a 3rd round pick?

That is a lot to pay for a 28 Y/O with a major drug problem. He is on something like 800k a year and has 3 + years on his contract at Westcoast which we would have to at least match. I wouldn't be prepared to make that trade. Kerr on the other hand is a different story!

Corey and a 2nd round pick fro Cousins and a 3rd round pick would be fair. But why would you want to give away your best midfielder for Cousins, not going to make any difference.

I wonder if geelong would accept Playfair and your 1st round pick (9-13) for him.

Do West Coast have to pay out Cousin's contract even if he is unable to play because of drug involvement? If so....

No one would consider paying him anywhere near his current contract pay if they could recruit him.

Would this be possible?

West Coast release Ben because of his contacts and influence in Perth (they have a midfield to die for anyway). They pay him out.
The club he joins pays a much smaller contract over say 2 years with the option of the third if all goes well, and this releases some money back to West Coast for another players contract.
Ben nominates a club (assuming he doesn't want to finish yet) and that club also provides an early draft pick(as a sweetener and on a small pay packet for two years).

Because Ben's Dad played for Geelong he nominates us and we take him in the preseason draft.

Would we be interested?

It seems Westcoast are stuck paying his contract in full and would have to pay the difference between current contract and the hypothetical contract if he was traded. He cannot nominate a club in the preseason draft but Westcoast can trade him for a draft pick provided Ben, Westxoast and the 3rd team all agree with the trade.

While contracts are usually heavily geared towards the rights of the players, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a clause that nullified the contract where their was a substantial breach of contract. But seeing that WCE haven't pursued this avenue, that option may well now be closed to them. One for the lawyers.

It is a stupid question, why would Geelong give up anyone for Cousins ??

I know I wouldn't, the risk is too high to give away anyone without a drug problem.

Give away J Corey ??? The people saying that on this thread must be on the same stuff as Cousins.

We cannot and should not give away a player for someone with a 3-4 year old drug issue. It is known around all circles in Perth that he has had a fairly serious problem for that time.

Would you be prepared to give up a player who has given his all for the club for a drug addict ??

IMO, No way.

Definitely not. Cousins is getting far too old and I wouldn't want to take the risk on his mental state after all these developments with his drug problems.

Additionally, Joel Corey is pivotal for our team who gives his all week after week.

Somehow I would think the Eagles would want a first round draft pick with a player for someone with Cousin ilk. Also, given their depth of midfielders (and they seem to be doing alright without Cousins at the moment), I would think they would be after a key position player or small forward.

Anyone who is watching today's game knows he is exactly the sort of player we need. Not because he is a hard running midfielder who can kick goals but because he is a natural leader. Whether or not it would be worth trading what we'd need to trade to get him and paying his salary is another question. But we definitely need to develop some sort of leadership at the club.

We need this guy in our midfield
