Well the simple answer is that due to the GFC they are scared of losing money on original ideas that may flop.

Hence the sequels and remakes of an already profitable IP...less risk of them losing money when the film's IP is already established and has a fan base.

It's really about risk vs reward rather than about art these days.

Also audiences are more sceptical and pirate more original works than existing franchises.

This is one of my favourite movies af all time (Charlton Heston Version)

I rewatched it yesterday. The scale of the thing is mind boggling. 3 hours 40 runtime, the number of extras and horses, the huge sets. Heston was a specimen and his acting was fine, maybe a little overacting sometimes. I was looking for what Gore Vidal claimed about the gay subtext between Ben Hur and Messala but I couldn't see it. I reckon the plot lost its way a little after Messala died. The last 40 minutes about Jesus seemed a bit tacked on.

Star Wars borrowed quite a bit from it. The giant arena crowd scenes, the chariot/pod races, the score.

Did you spot the bloke from Dad's Army?

A great movie.
