It's all about keeping a good mix this time of year. One clear attribute Bevo has over Mathews is his pace. But Mathews for all his deficiencies is a good stopper.
Looking at the kids on the list I'd say Grundy is the only one likely to hold his spot into the finals. We have Phillips as a goal sneak - but his size, experience and form shouldn't see him last much longer. Only Amon's illness gifted him a berth last night. Schmiddy hasn't done too much wrong, but again with Crouch, Amon and Mathews waiting in the wings I shouldn't expect too many more appearances.
I'd say Dempster has finally done enough to remain in the squad - especially with his finals experience from last year. Mal is a start up selection these days. And Teddy - combined with his utility roles forward and back - has certainly found a new lease of life taking that rucking role around the ground.
Big decision pending for Roos regarding our rucking structure going forward. Doyle is close to selection. But certainly having Goodes and Richards playing that assisting role has given us a lot more flexibility than we had with two lumbering ruckmen a la Chambers.
Then we have the wild card of Davis. If Davis has found some fitness Bevo will struggle to hold a spot. But if Davis still can't chase up the field there'll remain a question mark over him until he's had more time in the reserves. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer for his return.
On Mathews: I'd want to have as much pace as we can muster against the Demons this week. So I'd be tempted to keep Bevo in. With Davey and Pickett and potentially Robbo all likely to miss it'd be great to run them off their feet.

I doubt he'll return this year, isn't he the one injured with the thumb? If thats the case, i don't think he'll return this year. Roosy said something about putting his season in jeopardy if he returned... don't know what that's all about.
