Opinion Ben Sinclair - Never again

When I watched the replay yesterday i was looking for all these glaring horrible turnovers and stuff ups from Sinkers but to my surprise there was only one howler ....

Replays don't show the whole picture Kirby.
in the final quarter, Douglas from Adelaide found himself alone inside 50. He took an uncontested mark and goaled. The replay would not have shown you why.
IMO, Sinclair should have been able to force a contest as he was guarding useless space nearby and didn't recognise the danger was where Douglas was lurking. The replay does not pick these things up.

FWIW, I don't understand so many of our supporters wanting Blair to be dropped.
Blair brings so much more to the team than Sinclair.

I dont see Sinclair being in the team at years end, but making a positioning error. Is part and parcel of being a under 10 game defender. Treat him like a first year player, I think he has been solid.

The difference between Sinclair and Blair, is as simple as Sinclair is playing Back Pocket (where he is competing with Clarke & Yagmor) and Blair plays Mid / Fwd, allot more Fwd when Beams finds his feet, where he is competing with Martin, Oxley, Goldsack, Mooney & Didak.

I think it is as simple as until someone in VFL demeands Sinclairs / Blair's spot they stay. While they are doing the team things and no one in the VFL is they stay.

There is a reason for that. Pendles makes so many positive contributions in a game that a solitary mistake doesn't go even close to canceling it out. Sinclair doesn't have that luxury, not because people are being unfair, but because he doesn't really contribute all that much and his mistakes stand out. Rightly or wrongly, there is a reason he is what you are calling a 'whipping boy' and not someone else. They are better players than him.

It wasn't one mistake last night either. Were you there? I only ask because it is really hard to assess a player's positioning on tv. He was caught in no man's land at least four or five times and genuinely looked out of his depth. Adelaide just weren't good enough to punish him. His tackling was really sloppy and reckless as well. My mate who was with me, who really knows his footy as he watches it for a living (he is an AFL statistician) and was neutral (he doesn't support Collingwood or Adelaide), made the same comments numerous times.
Spot on!!

Why do people continue to defend this roach? People say "those who hate him will continue to hate him no matter what" but I say "those who defend him will continue to defend him no matter what". He was just plain embarrassing on Friday night. He cannot be trusted to not f*** up at crucial moments.

after many weeks of defending him enjoy your humble pie. lol.
You've had 19 posts since 2008...
Are they all as profound as this?

Anyways, here are some rebuttals to various statements that have been made on this thread.

"Sinclair is getting lost in the play"... He's a forward who's gone to the back line. He's been there 5 weeks. Give him a break. This would be like telling Ed Cowan to become a bowler when he hasn't even figured out how to bat yet.

"Marley is better than Sinclair"... Excellent observation. We should really clone Marley and play 2 of him. -.-
Fact is we need another small defender to cover Toovey. So... Yep.
We really should never play blokes who can't kick and get lost sometimes! But, if we did that then Swan, Marley, Toovey, Maxwell, Blair, Josh Thomas, Seedsman, Harry O, Witts and Clinton Young would all not be getting games right now or would never have made it to this point had we not persisted with them.

How about we bring Marty "only plays well in the first 7 games of the season" Clarke back in for Sinclair? No.
Sinclair will be replaced by Toovey. He's a good stop gap replacement.

It is apt that BJ retired while Sinclair is maligned by so many of you. This is exactly how BJ was spoken about in his early games

I don't why you blokes expect players to come into the AFL as ready made elite footballers.

Did anyone actually listen to Bucks presser about the changing pressure on our defense especially with Adelaide's spread? Sinclair was not the only one caught out of position.

He is not supposed to contribute like Penfles. He has a role to play and is DEVELOPING nicely as a small defender.

For the knockers - get used to it - he's going to be around a long time.

If you think BJ started out any differently you're revising history.

Give the kid a break!

I am literally disgraced.

I wonder how many people in this thread were also calling for Buckley's head 2 weeks ago.

Sinclair is going along really well. For a guy who has never played defence in his life, he is doing a terrific job.

Clearly Friday night was not his best game. That said, our defence was exposed. It was not just Sinclair's opponent who dominated...Porplyzia, Lynch and Lyons kicked 11 between them. Jenkins could've kicked 3 as well.

Sinclair has stood up...even against Port Adelaide he was pretty good.

His kicking is still an issue. But he is replacing Toovey at the moment and Toovey's kicking is an issue as well. So is Marley's. However, Tooves has improved drastically in this area, and I believe Sinclair can as well.

Is Sinclair best 22 with a full squad?? I'm not sure. However, he is clearly top 22 at the moment, and I think he has been really impressive.

He probably didn't have a really suitable match-up as well against Adelaide. Porplyzia was clearly going to be too strong for him. I think Sinclair is better suited to the small forwards like Garlett or Neade who are not a marking threat.

I think he deserves praise for the way he has acquitted himself to his new role. A full pre-season working on his defensive skills will make him a much better player as well. Credit to Buckley also for turning his career around...because he was heading for delistment as a forward.

Perfectly said. Jonno was a huge whipping boy. Even after the 2010 GF people were still getting stuck into him. Yet he was probably one of the most important players to the team when he was up and going.

Let's hope Sinclair's career is just as good.

Does anyone else detect a hint of irony about this post? Sinclair has continued to prove himself capable in the backline. Some posters like TD have been able to recognize this despite original criticism. I wonder if travie/Stifler et al are willing to give any credit?

Whether or not Sinclair is best 22 is irrelevant because we don't have anyone else to come in lol.

Unless you consider Seedsman as a small defender

Loving Sink's game the last few weeks. Disposal and decision making are improving greatly too!

I know what you're doing here.;)

Not being disingenuous actually. When he was sent back to VFL i think Tapping started playing him in the back half. Now, I don't have inside info to suggest that it would have come from Bucks or not.

Sinclair is playing good honest football. He is definitely a small defender as opposed to a small forward.

Loses his spot when Toovey comes back in simply because Toovey is better in the air, quicker and is equivalent in footskills. However, for now Sinclair is holding his spot.

I think if we drop Sinclair, then Shaw goes more defensive and maybe Harry O needs to go back as well. Otherwise Seedsman has to play a lock down role.

I still think Sinclair is a fair way off top 22, but he deserves his spot at the moment.

Of course it would've come from Bucks. How pissed off do you think Bucks would be if he's playing Sinkers fwd in the seniors but his reserves coach is playing him back.

Yea fair point but I have a confession to make.. I have a massive man crush on Dale, I want to attribute all our successes to him & want him to be the mayor of Melbourne.

To be honest I thought Sinclair's game yesterday was decent. Not great, but not terrible.
He did however have some "Sinclair only" moments, but the circumstances of the match meant that we didn't pay any price.

We don't usually see players exposed in 13 goal wins. Lets see how he goes in the next fortnight.

IMO he should only be depth, however I will concede that he is improving.

Personally I don't understand the need for 3 small defenders.
Marley and Heath are our 2 smalls and Toovey next year makes 3.
Sidey is also playing as a small defender, although we want him freed up to be creative.

He can only be assistant mayor..........:)

Sinclair is the sort of player who will look alright when we win (as most players will-refer to nathan ablett in 2007gf), but very below average when we lose (normal Sinclair). He may be able to fill a void until we get somone decent in but he is not the answer
