Was flicking channels and caught a bit of a game between the Roys and the Tigers in the mid 80s. Classic 80s shootout in terms of high scoring - 118 to 142, bugger we lost.

Bernie got thrown into the ruck for the centre bounces. I watched at one stage, he took the centre bounce, then it went to the wing for another ball up. Someone took the secondary bounce. We cleared it and kicked it forward, and there he was again going for the pack mark. He'd kicked 3 or 4 goals to that stage. He really was the complete football package - superb mark, extraordinary kick (people talk about the perfect swing in golf, Bernie had the perfect kicking motion, quite agile, skilled, great at grabbing the ball out of the ruck at throw ins....

He was at his best in the final qtr of the 83 Qualifying Final. Whats your favourite Bernie moments?

1986 against the swans, he won the ball out of the ruck kicked it around the body and slotted through an important goal in the last quater.

That 80m goal in the 1978 grand final of the night series.

Hey, they must be giving that game a flogging on "The Winners with Flares"!

I've seen the same match twice this week and we still can't win it!

Not my favourite but the last image I have of Bernie is that of a 45 year old playing in the forward pocket for Donvale in the EFL. He kicked 2 that week in a losing side and still had great presence. Only ended up playing half a dozen games.

On a side not Brendan "Billy" McCormack is back at Donvale next season as senior coach. It will be his second stint as coach taking over from former Blue Adrian Whitehead I think.

They train on an adjoining oval where I play cricket.
Billy still has the most sensation hand & foot skills, & still remains a really nice bloke.

Glenn 'Galaxy' Coleman also played at the club for a while.
Last saw him when they played against the club I support down the road. Didn't do overly much but did create a large presence.

I saw the Spaceman a few weeks ago somewhere - still looks like he could play now.

Peter Foster played for a couple of years as well.

Galaxy actually made their team of the century.

Hello - sorry to intrude, but Quinlan played a game in the ruck for Footscray in the early/mid 70s, filling in for Dempsey who was on state duty (in the days when interstate games were played on the same day). In those days he was a bit hit and miss - would play a blinder at CHB or CHF, then go missing. On this day (v Collingwood, I think) he killed them - centre square bounces, around the ground, marking. Can't remember going to the next week's match (I was only a young tacker, and I think my memories are as much based on what I remember adults around me saying at the game as what I REALLY remember), but I think the experiment was shelved. On his day, he could play anywhere and do anything. Still one of my favourite Footscray players, even afetr all these years, and the later career at Fitzroy.

I say dump Quinlan, he's not bloody consistent enough. If I were Footscray I'd get rid of him. Trade him to a club worse off than them, like Fitzroy. What a joke they are! Called Fitzroy but they play at Saint Kilda! They'll be lucky to be around by the end of the century.

In hindsight, "Fitzroy" Street was a handy name for the nearest corner wasn't it....
