u hear about big ben wallace and tim duncan and ron artest but wat about theo ratliff. This guy is unbeleiveable his 6ft10 leads the league in blocks per game and had 9 blocks against the orlando magic today. Portland really did get the better of the deal send rasheed walace to altlanta in return for big theo and reef

He is a great shot blocker no doubt, havings said that he often goes for blocks at the expense of his rebounding position (ie does not block out as well), hence fails to secure a defensive rebound. This is what makes Wallace and Duncan so amazing, ie not only do they get blocks but they are rearly out of rebouding position.

Ron Artest is different type of defensive player and a best exponent of in your face defence. He is just as comfortable in denying the ball, guarding the post or guarding a dribble. The big reason why I rate Artest as the best defensive player is the fact that his role is to guard players all over the court and not just in the lane or post. The big advantage that you have when low post defence is that the space in which an offensive player has is limited. This lack of space, if you learn how to position yourself appropriately, is post defenders greatest friend. Artest does not have luxury of this and the area that he needs to defend within is far greater, can be full court at some stages, and that, combined with successes he has had this year, is the reason why I classify him as the greatest defender this year.

I'm a big rap for a guy that not only plays intense defence, but also makes their opponent work hard when the shoe is on the other foot.

A guy like Ron Artest is as in-you-face as it gets as a defender, but unlike others who have carried the "defensive specialist" tag, Artest can then turn around and school you at the offensive end as well.

Ben Wallace will never be a massive offensive threat, nor will Ratliff, but Artest is every night (though he has had some shocking shooting nights this season, admittedly).

For that reason, I give the nod as the best defensive player to Artest as he doesn't give his opponent a rest once the ball is turned over. He is just at it for the entire time he is on-court

From what I've seen, Kirilenko would have to be up there.

Spot on Kenneth.

Kiri has a similar mindset to Artest, his feels compelled to play defence, thinks it's the basis of basketball, which is an attitude i love.

Theo is a star...

But Kirra' this year has been too good. i hate him, but he is a star defender.

It not often that I agree with you so whole heartedly...it is the attitude that I love too...

By the way you must love Kirk Hinrich then!

:D He hates anything to do with the Bulls...all stems back to MJ and the 6 rings...the jealousy and all that. Hinrich though is a star.
