we got the full forward c/h forward thread and i thought the defenders always get left out.
from adelaides point of view you got bock and rutten who have both been AA in recent time. lake and morris is also pretty good but morris a little undersized. i'm sure someone will mention scarlett and taylor but to me taylor is not good enough

Your giving 2009 examples. If it's the best FB/CHF combo ever then I'd nominate Herb Henderson and Ted Whitten. They were the Full-Back and Center-Half Back of our Premiership side in 1954 and were both keys to Footscray's super-defence back then, setting the record for least amount of goals conceded in a season (959 points). Not to mention, both in Team of the Century.

and that's not even getting to the fact that Ted Whitten is considered one of the best players to ever play the game.

New this would be an Adelaide supporter as soon as a saw the thread. Bock/Rutten are by far the stand outs in my eyes. Taylors still developing and Morris is too small as said.

I can't see how you can argue anything other than Adelaide for this one.

...Wait, hang on. Is this based on history or currently? Because if it's currently then it would work better in the Poll Board/Australian Football League board.

You mean Footscray's team of the century, yes?

Agree. Langford is one of my favorite Full backs of all time. Ahead of SOS and probably up with Scarlett.

Langford is behind both SOS and Scarlett as a full back. I see him as a good player in a champion team. I would take SOS, Scarlett, Fletcher, Ash McIntosh Mick Martyn or Gary Pert over Langford going on FBs i've seen.

Hard to go past Densch and Glendinning as the best.

McIntosh and Jakovich were very good in their prime: McIntosh is very underrated, a super quick FB with a great spoil, Jakovich was the only guy who could match it for strength and ability with Carey in his prime.

Paul Roos and Gary Pert formed a pretty handy combo for Fitzroy back in the day.

Debatable if langford is above silvagni. but is on par with scarlett at least.
Mcintosh, Martyn and Pert-are you taking the piss. All good full backs but not in the same class as langford.
Langford was before his time. He ran off the full forward/CHF constantly and was as good in the air as any backman has been. Strong, athletic and rarely given a bath, even in his twilight years.
Langford had a few good battles with carey himself.

Maybe taking the piss with Martyn and Pert a little! McIntosh was a very good (underrated) full back, as were Martyn and Pert. I rate Langford on par with Fletcher/McIntosh. I know it's debatable, but that's the way I see it. Feel free to disagree/argue!

I rate them as follows:

Scarlett/Silvagni

Fletcher/Langford/McIntosh

Martyn/Pert

I do remember Langford having some epic battles with Kernehan, they were always a good match up, and of course when they played on each other you usually had Silvagni on Dunstall up the other end.....golden days of footy those were!

Gee .. I wonder why the state selectors kept picking Langford at full back instead of SOS. Gary Ablett Sr was asked who he thought the best full back in his day was, he said "Langford easily".

Best FB/CHB combo .... Langford and Mew, rarely beaten.

Close thread.

mal michael and leppitch, although michael never was AA so that might cost them

Who gives a shit if Mal wasn't AA, he certainly deserved to be. If that affects people's judgement then let them be pussywhipped by awards.

That was the first thought to enter my mind for best combo this decade.

Darryl Wakelin and Chad Cornes in 2004 was sublime for Port.

A brownlow medalist CHB and probably one of the best 3 FB's of all time beg to differ.

Fair enough. It is an opnion afterall. I still disagree with mcintosh tho. Fletcher is arguably up there with him. But Fletcher has benifited in the second half of his career in not always taking the best forward. Sheedy often played him as the second or third tall. Langford took the best forward every week. Full forwards or CHF.

Pert FB
Roos CHB
was actually a good one too

Pert
Roos
R Lyon
Lynch
Osborne
is not a bad spine either!

if only they enjoyed abit of success or had more $$ around the club, they had good individuals.
