He has always been one of my favourite cyclists. He had a great career with the obvious highlights being his road race win at the Athens Olympics and his 2006 and 2007 world road race championships. I just loved the way he used to attack so relentlessly.

It looks like Italian cycling may have a heir to the thrown though after Alessandro Ballan took out the World Championship yesterday.

brilliant rider anyway: always looking to attack, always riding at the front and was a very good team player at the same time.

2006 World Champs was his best ever win, Athens race wasn't too far behind.
